Here’s an example of unintended consequences. Many Americans have long been against H1B workers in tech and for some very sound reasons. The problem begins with America’s colleges and universities. Comp Sci and IT related degree programs have been filled with foreigners for decades. They get preferential treatment because they pay full tuition. Add to that, for some insane reason, colleges are proud of their diversity. Having foreign students is somehow better than having the best students. Make no doubt about it, the best and brightest are not filling our colleges. It’s the ones that pay the most.

To compound matters, the entire diversity movement has a negative impact among American students due to the fact that some identity groups are given preferential treatment in admissions. It’s gone as far that Asian Americans are discriminated against in STEM degrees.

We no longer live in a meritocracy. That compounds itself. Management in American business is filled with incompetent affirmative action hires. It’s highly prevalent in tech, where by nature the best IT workers usually don’t make good managers. Thus, women and minorities are thrown in management positions to keep quotas high. They really don’t know jack chit about what they manage.
