Jim Jordan's never-before-tried strategy to become House speaker
Yahoo News ^ | October 18th, 2023 | Jon Ward

Republican Jim Jordan gained momentum toward becoming the next speaker of the House on Monday, helped along by a strategy that has never before been used to win a leadership post in Congress.

In a position usually decided behind closed doors, the Ohio congressman has instead invited public pressure on Republican lawmakers from right-wing media figures.

It is “the threat of the conservative media ecosystem coming crashing down on them,” Brendan Buck, who was a top adviser to former Speaker Paul Ryan, told Yahoo News.

Trepidation about that threat seemed on Monday to have helped Jordan get to the verge of winning the speakership in a vote scheduled for Tuesday.

I don't like him because of his commitment to bundle Israel and Ukraine aid, and put the combined bill on the floor in spite of a majority of the caucus being opposed to any further Ukraine aid.

However, many conservatives like the guy for reasons I cannot fathom.

That said his pressure campaign is pissing off a lot of members and each subsequent vote is likely to receive fewer affirmatives.

He's toast.

This is a lot of crocodile tears coming from liberal media.

Normally the media get to pick the next GOP (insert position) but Jordan is helping conservative media get its say. This is a fantastic two-fer here.

Curious to see how this plays out. He is popular with conservatives because he fights for conservative principles.

Personally, I’m about done with both parties. The dems are corrupt and drunk with lust for maximum power and control over every aspect of our existence and will not stop until their socialist dream comes true. The GOP is filled with self-serving wimps who do not care for the middle class, only their high powered bib-money overseers and they are terrified of the dems and the media.

As my sons likes to remind me, Washington, DC is one big party and the average American is NOT invited.

Who would you rather have ... that can win? Just as with speakers past, certain concessions are made to win the vote, but that does not mean that they will actually follow through ... see Kevin McCarthy. I would rather have a solid conservative that does what is necessary to win the speaker then control the legislation later. Perfect is the enemy of good.

This is why I refuse to givew money to the Republican Party. They can’t figure out how to beat back the Dem’s, as the Dem’s ALWAYS stick together. We eat our own. The stupid ass RINO’s would rather see a Hakeem Jeffries in there so they can bitch about, “... if only the Republicans were in charge, it would be different...” NOTE: You idiots have a majority, but you’re not in charge. Figure it out or get used to Minority Status going forward and forever.

I don’t have a choice for Speaker.

And I don’t get a vote.

“Curious to see how this plays out.”

I only want it to play out to Republicans’ advantage come next election. I don’t care about the current disorder and gridlock.

That's the conventional wisdom, I guess we'll soon find out if they vote again today.

This is after the never-before removal of a Speaker in the middle of a session, and the never-before failure to replace him. He’s trying to bring down the curtain on this never-before-staged act of the clown show. Why have a problem with that?

The premise of this article is not correct.

Pressure from the dominant media has been applied to the speakers race since at least 1936.

What is new, is the conservative media pressure.

Really. Why does the Uniparty tolerate this irritant? Just “Trump” up some charges, arrest him and be done with it. I’ve read he used to be a homo, child molesting wrestler, by the way.

However, many conservatives like the guy for reasons I cannot fathom.

Here's a reason anyone should be able to fathom: all of the alternatives are worse. There is no one else with any hope of achieving the votes who is better than Jordan - he is the most conservative of all the possibilities with any prayer of becoming Speaker.

There is no other conservative dream candidate waiting out there with the votes needed. From there, we can either spend time fantasizing about Trump becoming Speaker or deal with the very real possibility that Hakeem Jeffries might end up as Speaker, or the even more real possibility that Hakeem Jeffries will end up deciding who the next Speaker will be. Jeffries controls his caucus - the GOP is all over the place.

So much for an independent, objective media. They’re just political shills. All of them. For both parties.

Well, the House convened and is doing a quorum vote. Next, another try for Jordan.

This process shows what type of train wreck exists in the current GOP. And it really shows how conservatism is not greatly respected throughout the party. Liberal Republicans (and there appears to be quite a few) have no respect or fear of the RNC, or other party leaders. Bullying them is not a productive tactic, but using leverage does not have to be intimidating. This leadership failure likely goes back to Boehner and Ryan, and was certainly evident in McCarthy’s term as Speaker. As squishy as McConnell is, he seems to have a better grip on the GOP caucus in the Senate than anyone has on the GOP House.

Eh, unfortunately the nature of a representative democracy is compromise. Been that way ever since we had to give the Democrats voting authority for 3/5 of their slaves.

I’m a fan of helping Israel. That’s money well invested in the direct interest of the USA and morally fair.

Ukraine, I’m luke warm, to opposing now, as they are clearly a bottomless pit and siphoning off aid.

But, I’d tie both to money for building a giant wall all along the USA/Mexico border.

“I don’t like him because of his commitment to bundle Israel and Ukraine aid”

This is a lie pushed by Axios and Yahoo to get his support to tank. He has agreed to a floor vote. If the rino’s vote for the bundle they will be exposed.

There-in lies the problem for the MSM. We can’t have anyone else applying ‘pressure’.

Mariner apparently wants someone who will disappoint him and give him another excuse to whine.

I have about had it with the “Principled Conservatives” on this site. No matter what happens or who is elected, it isn’t right and on and on whine.
