Except, it doesn’t matter if Hitler is thrilled. A country of the people and by the people, does not need FDR, we need the best second in command you can find. Wasn’t it Truman by them? I imagine a better outcome with him in a position of POTUS. He took not guff and was tough as nails.

You are right, but I think you are missing the spirit of the time. FDR had been President for 12 years and people had a hard time imagining anyone else holding the office. People I’ve talked to (now all dead, of course) remembered the place and time they heard the news like 9/11 for us.

An odd quirk—Hitler ruled Germany for pretty much the same time period that FDR was President of the US only a few weeks difference.
