It has now been almost two weeks since every Democrat in the House joined eight Republicans in ousting Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speaker’s office. It does not appear that House Republicans are even a single step closer to picking a new leader.
Time is running out. The temporary spending authority that triggered the Republican malcontent’s coup against McCarthy runs out in four weeks. Congressional action to authorize aid to Israel in its fight against Hamas may come before then. When those deadlines approach, the House will have to vote to give temporary powers to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC).
Why not just vote to give McHenry those powers now until someone in the Republican conference can find the 217 votes needed to become speaker?

They want to put McCarthy back in. This is pay back from Mitt Romney.
This shows the RINO party is actually dead.
Some 95% of all the woe in this world comes from self-inflicted damage to the immediate environment, and a resulting bad response only compounds the growing error.

Hakeem Jeffries will be Speaker by Thursday.
And what if enough Republicans don’t vote or go over to the Democrats?
If that happens, this won’t look like the worst idea.

Whoever is elected Speaker needs to get sorted out in the next week so that he can ensure the government is shut down in November!

IF SO don’T they need 218 votes???
IF there are any missing members-—why haven’t those positions been filled??????????
HE is a crimunal

Bank fraud charges
HE spent hard $$$$$$$ to get those records expunged.

I believe there are a couple of open seats. One member is out with a new baby. There are almost always a couple open seats.
Unlike Senate seats, House seats that are vacated are subject to special elections that often have to roll into the state’s election cycle.
In those cases, the staff of the previous occupant will run constituent services for their district.

Thanks for pointing out that the pro tem has some closeted history folks apparently would prefer to ignore. That he's in Congress is bad enough, that he's so close to the Speaker's Lobby this morning is alarming and beyond the pale.

There are two vacancies (see details below). Representatives are not appointed. They must be elected. Elections have been scheduled.
Current House Makeup Vacancies: RI-01: Rep. David Cicilline (D) resigned 6/1/23. Special primary 9/5/23, special general 11/7/23. UT-02: Rep. Chris Stewart (R) to resign 9/15/23. Special primary 9/5/23, special general 11/21/23.
They have to have special elections to replace Congressmen, the Senate vacencies are appointed by Governor.
