Well, actually...

70% of the budget had been passed by the House in separate appropriations bills by the week that first the CR with the 30% cuts and then the CR with the 8% cuts were defeated. 3 more appropriations bills were passed that week. My Rep. felt that the additional 30 days was sufficient to complete the process with the separate bills. So, I have to question why the 30 day CR with the 8% cuts was voted down by Gaetz and Co., which then precipitated the whole mess. McCarthy’s judgement was that a shutdown was politically disastrous*, which then got us the 45 day CR @ current spending levels — not great, but at least it would have allowed for completion of the process with separate Appropriations bills. “Would have”, but Gaetz responded with the Speakership vacation using collusion with ALL the Dems. And here we are.

*I don’t have to like McCarthy because that’s irrelevant on this point: Over the years I’ve talked to a lot of moderates — they do make up a large chunk of the population — and never have any been favorable toward shutdowns.

A second point that I’ve yet to see addressed on FR is that purple districts tend to produce either Dems who campaign as moderates and then vote however the House Dem leadership tells them to vote, or “purple” Pubbie Reps. Moderate or Rhino reps. in solid Red districts who vote moderate can be criticized, sure, but Moderate or Rhino reps. in purple districts who vote contrary to their district are not going to be around for long. (This happens to Dems who vote too liberal too.) FReepers can scream bloody murder at Newt all they like for pointing out that 18 Pubbie held seats are in districts that went for Biden in 2020, and quite a few Pubbie seats are in purple or very tight districts, but all the inane comments in the world don’t change that political reality.

Seriously, do FReepers expect Pubbie Reps in purple districts to consistently vote against their constituents expectations?

Other than coming up with more persuasive candidates (at least a credible illusion that the GOP can govern without chaos, helps), this problem can only be solved at the voter level. How many FReepers can admit this?

What a good post. That history of the appropriations bills passed thus far is how M. Levin recounted the events leading up to McCarthy’s ouster.

You’ll find few that will make that admission.

Many are caught up in election fraud is a reason that Republicans (especially Conservatives) don’t do better.

Some believe the answer is the “less is more” strategy. That path scuttles Reagan’s big tent philosophy and believes the way to victory is to have a party that encourages moderates and more independent types to “get the hell out”. I call it the Kari Lake strategy. That idiot was telling voters to get out of her campaign rally days before the election if they had been McCain supporters.

If Jordan cannot win SOTH, there does not seem to be any viable path to a Republican SOTH.

Good post but you're talking turkey to the red meat crew.

I don't think it will be Hakeem, they'll never get rid of him.

Manu Poojab is just stirring the sh!tpot with his #MSM Big Lie Of The Day - the vote will happen tomorrow and then we will see - there's no reason not to just the Interim Speaker roll on in situ while this sorts itself out.

I can’t speak for other freepers but this one believes you are a FRAUD if you call yourself a Republican in the campaign and then vote Democrat if and when you are elected which SEEMS to be what you are saying is “ok”.

Make no mistake, who’s speaker is only PART of what this “vacate” the speakers office is all about, the main part is that this is a battle over the soul of the Republican Party. If you have to lie to your “constituents” to get elected then you should not run in the first place. More simply put the REAL battle is, as always, THE LEFT vs THE RIGHT! Think of 2 dogs in the back yard fighting over a bone!
