In the West Virginia Republican race to succeed Gov. Jim Justice, three-term Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is leading by 11 points against House Judiciary Committee Chairman Moore Capito, according to a new poll.
The poll, conducted by Americans for Prosperity, a super PAC established by the Koch network, shows Morrisey with a much more significant lead over Capito, the son of Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), since the last polling was released over the summer.
According to the poll, Morrisey leads with 29%, while Capito carries 18% of those polled. Other prominent candidates in the governor's race, like Secretary of State Mac Warner, are polling at 8%, auto dealer Chris Miller at 6%, and entrepreneur Rashida Yost at 1%.

Just take a guess what her son would be like as governor.
It could be he doesn’t share his mother’s beliefs. Look at Reagan and son. Total opposite.
I don’t care for that woman but she was there to step in when Rockefeller left. That red state seat shoda’ been ours all along. Same with Thune taking on Dashcle in SD(2004). We don’t know if the acorn falls far from the tree in regards to her son but but I’d stay away. Still a Governorship is not as important as a senate seat these days. Shelly Moore Capito outlived her usefulness as they all do after 2 terms.
We’re ok either way I think. The real job ahead is getting the Mancin seat.
“It could be he doesn’t share his mother’s beliefs.”
He pretty much does. He’s a moderate.
At least Moore Capito’s not an outright liberal, but Morrissey is clearly the better choice.
Tangentially, all due respect to Gov Justice, but he’s had ill health and would be 3 months short of 74 on taking office. Do we really lack younger people who can govern this country?
But voting on the basis of family ties is setting up a nobility class!
Young (52) conservative Alex Mooney is running against elderly moderate Jim Justice in the Senate primary to see who gets to defeat Joe Manchin (who probably will retire) in West Virginia in 2024.
Now guess which GOP candidate the establishment and the big $$$$ greatly favors, and which candidate they claim “can’t [be allowed to] win”.
Actually, Justice hadn’t been a bad governor. How much of that is him or the supermajorities GOP in both Houses of the legislature is hard to say.
Mooney beat the Tea Party “evolved-to-RINO” McKinley when they merged congressional districts. McKinley deserved to go. Mooney who I will vote for in the GOP Senate primary is a carpetbagger. He simply is! He tried to be the GOP Congressman for the western panhandle of Maryland and failed. He moved 30 miles or so across the border into WV and ‘Ta-Dah’ won a congressional seat and now has a political career. He’s young and much more conservative than Justice far better MAGA choice (Note Justice and Trump know each other through the resort business and are on good terms.) Justice’s family owns the Greenbrier Resort. Mooney should have waited one more congressional term or more before challenging for senator’s seat. It would look better and help diminish the carpetbagger look. Doing what he’s doing will enhance it. The question for a lot of people is ‘What we he do if he loses?’. I think he should have waited and challenged Capito. She’s currently keeping it warm for one of her two sons. (Both in the legislature!) I dislike political dynasties on principle. I look for reasons to vote against potential dynasts no matter how conservative!
Justice will win the primary and beat Manchin if he runs. Like I said Justice will be credited as a ‘good governor’ and people here give him credit for saving the Greenbrier.
A 43% rating would make him a left wing RINO.
“A 43% rating would make him a left wing RINO.”
If you’re referring to Moore Capito, his lifetime ACU rating for 6 years in the WV legislature is 83%. That doesn’t make him the second coming of Jesse Helms, but he’s probably not a complete RINO like his mother.
If you’re referring to Jim Justice, I doubt he’d be THAT bad (43%) but anyone expecting him to be a solid conservative — as would be fitting for one of the most Republican states in the union — will very likely be quite disappointed.
I realize that lots of WV voters are new to the GOP and retain their “economic populism” from bygone days; they aren’t going to care as much about “lower muh taxes” as they are about keeping SOME kind of safety net in place in this not-exactly-upscale state, but if we can’t elect a conservative Senator here in 2024, then where CAN we? WV is pretty conservative on non-economic issues.
Naturally all of the recent polls echo what the establishment desires — the most liberal GOP candidates in places like WV (Justice) and OH (Dolan) and probably Montana too — the GOP’s only real shots at Senate pickups — allegedly will fare better against their liberal Democrat opponents than a scary conservative would.
Ignorant voters need to be educated before the primary, and the conservative candidates likely won’t have anywhere near the budget for “education” that the establishment/liberals will.
Although I’ve used the ACU ratings for many years (although their website has become far more complicated in recent times to locate info), I’m noticing they seem to artificially inflate the ratings of a lot of Republicans and cherry-pick just a relative handful of votes. I know this because several years ago, the infamous RINO twins from Arizona, McQueeg and Flake, had unusually high numbers that didn’t match what we knew about either.
It seems like what’s been posted for the ratings at Liberty are far more in line with what may be reality.
It’s a bit harder to rate Governors, since they don’t necessarily have to take stances on legislative issues (since if they don’t get approved there, it won’t make it to their desk - by that reckoning, you might have a number of RINO Governors look far more “Conservative” than they should). My concern with Gov. Justice is his age and health issues, I don’t expect he would even live to serve a full 6 years, why I believe Rep. Mooney is far better suited.
As for OH and MT, both will likely nominate the Trump-supported candidates, and they should prevail.
