In the Navy, you generally actually need to know something of engineering and physics and such to operate effectively. This requires mathematics beyond high school Algebra I.
The sea is a very unforgiving environment.
Our military, which used to be the best in the world and the very definition of patriotic, has become apathetic mess.
Ships are like the gallows, they refuse no man.
I think my experience in the commercial working world covers this situation. Anytime someone is promoted into a position they are obviously not fit to handle it has a profound impact on the entire organization. The first impact is that whoever was more qualified for that position leaves as soon as possible. Qualified competent people under that person, and indeed, those elsewhere in the organization realize that their competence and qualifications are not important. They start planning an exit to someplace they feel will recognize their qualities. The new unqualified person promotes people under him who are no threat. The overall organization is permanently damaged.
A friend’s brother was really into being a Marine. He had several combat deployments. He quit, saying they had promoted a black over his unit whose orders were getting people killed. He wasn’t going to die because the Marines put in a diversity hire. How many others left? How many died so the Marines could have a black in a position of power and authority.

Certainly not for defending this nationas it’s mission number one.
I retired from the Navy in 1998. In the 80s black equal opportunity affirmative action was going 90 miles an hours. A few years before I retired the emphasis shifted to females. With the black equal opportunity it was kind of subtle, but with the females it was blatant. I worked for a female chief who had never done the job she was supposed to be supervising, and many more qualified men were passed over for her to be promoted. I retired just in time.
