The Russian attacks come after months of a slower than expected Ukrainian counteroffensive, launched this summer to claw back territory lost during Moscow's invasion.

Avdiivka is an industrial town that had a pre-war population of around 31,000. An estimated 2,000 remain.

It is symbolically and strategically important to Kyiv, lying just north of the Moscow-controlled city of Donetsk that was seized by separatist forces in 2014.

Avdiivka has since become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance against Moscow, with Kyiv clinging on there despite relentless Russian attacks during the Kremlin's almost 20-month long offensive.

Local officials told AFP that Moscow's forces launched an artillery attack on the town in the morning and were firing incessantly.

"For over a year, there has been the danger that (Avdiivka) can be occupied, but now the situation has worsened rapidly," said Vitaliy Barabash, head of the town's administration.

He said Russian forces were trying to besiege the eastern town using "all means."

"Our Avdiivka is under massive attacks by Russian artillery and aviation," presidential aide Andriy Yermak later said on social media.

Avdiivka is the town that Ukraine used to shell civilians in the nearby city of Donetsk, both before and during the Ukraine war. Ukraine uses a cute type of cluster bomb that separates that separates into bomblets, called a petal-bomb. These petals gently drop to the ground and is green in color, making them difficult to spot. Thankfully, it rarely kills civilians, but instead blows their legs off as they step on them.

Of course this would be a war crime if Ukraine didn’t have the support of the West and especially the Western media, but since they do have that support, it’s not a war crime. And THANK GOODNESS, there are already too many war crimes going on around the world.

Russia introduced them in Afghanistan decades ago.

The Russia army has been continuing their attacks in the area.

Things didn't go so well for this Russian column.

Anytime someone posts a Russian source there's a pro Ukrainian chorus singing, "LIES! ALL LIES!" and 'bias!' and insisting we must not read or even consider Russian content or assertions or even Russia's public request to the UN for investigations of the biolabs.

But the link you cite is of course Ukrainian. NOW there will be no screams of 'lies' and 'bias' from the pro Ukrainian side. Now they have a Ukrainian source from which both sides should draw all information.

Whatever the Ukraine does, it accuses Russia of doing - so I don't value your Ukrainian source. They've cried 'WOLF!" too many times, lied to much to the public about the war etc. No credibility left in Ukrainian sources.

The Soviet Union hasn’t used those petal mines since Afghanistan. I don’t believe the Russian Federation has ever used or kept them. However, Ukraine still has a large stock of them that they littered Donetsk with.

I have also seen plenty of videos of Ukrainians using chemical bombs from American drones on Russian troops. One of the reasons Musk cut off his Satellite internet over there.
