BBC Verify has been looking at footage emerging on social media from Israel and Gaza to build up a picture of what is happening.
We have been able to see the pattern that Hamas fighters have used in today's unprecedented attack: taking as many hostages as possible.
The most disturbing content shows hostages being taken from Israel and paraded on the streets.
One particularly distressing video shows a woman bloodied and barefoot, with her hands tied behind her back. She is then dragged out of a jeep by her hair and bundled into the back by armed men and driven off. We verified that this was filmed on the outskirts of Gaza city in Sheijia.
