My guess is it’s the increases in drug ODs and homicides that are driving the trend. It also explains it’s uniquely occurring in the USA. There’s no other country where a “defund the police” movement has mushroomed up overnight. There’s an epidemic in the USA of under 30s dying that no other county has.

Is there a statistical difference between the immigrant (especially illegal) population and the native born one? Has there been a significant change in the causes of death, especially drug overdose among the young. One overdose death at 20 can cancel the life expectancy increase of squeezing out one more year of life each for fifty old people.

Thing people forget about ‘life-expectancy’ is that its numbers are affected by infant mortality and how infant mortality is reported. A kid in the U.S. who takes a breath outside of the womb is counted as a live birth and if he or she dies before the next breath, that’s going to make average life expectancy shorter. Many/most nations do not count infant deaths the way we do.
