The House would be in uncharted waters if McCarthy is removed as speaker: A motion to vacate has never been used successfully.
But the chamber wouldn't be as paralyzed and chaotic as it was in January amid McCarthy's five-day, 15-ballot vote to win the gavel.
As part of a rule change after 9/11 to support the continuity of government, the speaker is required to deliver to the House clerk an ordered list of members who can act as speaker pro tempore in the event of a vacancy.
The person at the top of McCarthy's list will serve as interim speaker until a new one is elected.
If the motion to vacate is successful, the chamber could go right to another speaker vote -- and McCarthy's allies could put him forward again to reclaim his post.
But unlike in January, it's possible that the House could take up other business in the meantime: The chamber has a rules package, and the speaker pro tempore would have the authority to act as speaker until a new one is elected.

It’s all scripted, like WWF wrestling, when it’s all over, McCarthy will still be speaker.
That’s fine...
If Trump is involved he’s entitled to his opinion too.
I hope what you said is true.
McCarthy should not NEED a “come to Jesus” moment, though. Not at this stage of his career.
Newsmax reporting McCarthy ousted.
The final vote was 216-210
No he doesn’t
Well it just happened
No the Speaker Pro Tem comes off a list of 5 designated replacements by McCarty. So we would have to wait and see who is on the list. I wonder if he put himself 1st on the list?
This is getting hilarious to watch
Gaetz is tryng to get RINOs to act like men. It’s a hard job, someone has to do it. I don’t expect squishes to get it. Squish on.
The House Republicans look to be suicidal.
New Speaker pro tem is Patrick McHenry.
Why Junior? Trump Sr. himself...!!!!
3rd in line for the presidency, then impeach both joe AND the hoe, and Trump is back where he should be
Yep. Even though my posting history shows that Gaetz has been my favorite Congressman for many years now. He fell completely on his very sharp sword.
Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong, and he has a rabbit up his sleeve, but it doesn’t look like it so far. Looks like he’s taken a page out of his new mentor Trump’s book and made it more of a spectacle about him, than having an actual strategic plan and executing it.
He’s back after aggressive chemo, says cancer reduced. I think he could handle temporary duties, but to be Speaker full time .... guessing no. Gaetz said the other day he wanted to know the status of Scalise’s health issues before he named names for Speaker.
But if you want to take down a speaker, you don't just announce it.
chaos will ensue
So just maintain the status quo? That status quo being that the Biden and the Democrats continue to get whatever they want, there will be no border security measures implemented as all of that is up to the Executive Branch, Ukraine will continue to get billions printed out of thin air, while the Republican’s can get in front of a camera every once in a while and talk about the meaningless ‘victories’.
If chaos does ensue then that means that the House isn’t doing anything. Meaning Congress isn’t doing anything. Meaning they aren’t harming the American people.
One of the things that Gaetz talked to reporters about was the fact that there hasn’t been an actual budget in years. He said since the mid-90s but I think the last time the US government operated with a budget was 2007.
Ever since then, having learned, Congress has been nothing but Omnibus, CRs and whatever they throw at the last minute to they can rush it through with no debate, no nothing and we continue to get screwed, while they line their pockets and the pockets of their donors.
It’s pretty much Congress’s only job. But, in the last 9-10 months they’ve been unable to accomplish anything.
I’m not arguing about it. The guy is a loser but the problem remains who can you get to replace him?
That is not the accurate count. 95 opposed the CR. The CR passed via his deception, and passage depended on 111 GOP votes and 95 were already opposed pre deception.
Next thing you know he wants to bring Ukraine funding to the floor and have it pass via Dem votes.
That’s not the way the world works. You DO NOT advance legislation opposed by the majority of your caucus. Do that and you are removed.
Of course he shouldn’t need a come to Jesus moment but he’s a uniparty POS and he just can’t help himself.
WWF is like totally real. I suppose you don't believe in Santa either. What is wrong with you.
The most likely result is that he re commits to what he promised and actually follows through
Starting with the release of the Jan 6 tapes hopefully .
That's a really easy one but it will expose a lot ofRepublicans as liars who persecuted Trump supporters for political gain
