Kevin McCarthy Defeated in Effort to Quash GOP Dissidents: Live Analysis

Kevin McCarthy failed in an initial vote to block an effort to oust him by Rep. Matt Gaetz, putting his position as House speaker in peril.

Gaetz’s "motion to vacate" the speakership will now head for an official vote.

To prevail, McCarthy or his foes will need a majority of those voting, not just Republicans. Typically Republicans can lose no more than four GOP votes on party-line votes when all members are present. Democratic leaders recommended Tuesday that colleagues vote against saving McCarthy.

Exactly. People that blame Gaetz for making it clear that McCarthy is not keeping his promises are ostrich level enablers.

“””Why didn’t he do these bill months ago?””””

you are so correct. McCarthy slow walked the budget process and is now being held accountable.

The RINO’s can whine all they want, but they were part of the slow walking the budget bills.

For 25 years Congress has been passing CR’s.

In 2000 the National Debt was about $5 trillion and we passed $33 trillion about three weeks ago.

I keep asking my friends: “Where do you see that $28 trillion having been spent in your neighborhood in the past 25 years?????”

Yes, Bills come out of Committees. McCarthy apparently wants business as usual. And has not unleashed them.

He will just be the latest victim of being Republican speaker. Whoever succeeds him will suffer the same fate.

In the end, it’s all about making a statement, and nothing more. They’ll continue to cave in, and simply call it bipartisan.

Actually, as soon as Speaker Jeffries has the gavel, everything will run smoothly. Legislation will pour forth. The border will be closed. China trade will be slowed or stopped.

2024 slogan for Newsom/Whitmer: "See! The Democrats know how to get things done! We are the party that can govern!"

Bet on it.

Even Mark Levin, who has pretty much sold out to the fringe elements who buy his books, was ranting against this stunt last night, kind of a nice change of pace for him.

I feel like our country is now pretty much separated into a few broad groups. One, those who understand reality, see what is and is not possible, and work to do the best they can to make the most positive impact within that reality.

Two, those who don’t understand reality, and believe they can make things happen that will never happen, and therefore think that those who do not make those things happen are bad people who need to be opposed.

Three, those who understand reality, but don’t care, they feel it is better to fail and watch the world burn, than give in to any expectation that compromise might be necessary. Plus they can make lots of money at it.

Four, those who don’t really care what reality is, they just really like to watch the world burn, because it is funny and gets them hits on social media.

The 4th group is getting way too big, it’s like a fictional Gotham City except there half the population are Jokers.

The 3rd group might be reachable, if you can convince them to give up their narrow self-centered viewpoint and consider what might work for humanity as a whole.

The 2nd group is the scary ones, because they are like religious zealots, these are the people who actually believe a born male can become a female, that climate change is actually going to destroy the world in 12 years, that hundreds of people are involved in a top-secret conspiracy to tweak voting machines against one or two candidates while leaving no trace and allowing every other candidate they would oppose cruise to victory.

Often, those in group 4, like Matt Gaetz, pick up a decent following of type 2s, who despearately want to believe something good could happen.

There is no world in which the House will have a speaker who is “better” from our perspective than the current speaker. People who want to show their disdain for giving anything to the democrats by teaming up with the democrats seem unserious.

It really seems sometimes that Trump was correct. A lot of republicans just got really tired of winning. And now they work really hard to lose, lose spectacularly, and feel better about themselves.

Although he has not brought any bill to the floor that didn’t have the support of nearly the entire republican caucus.

And if he does end up bringing such a bill, it will be AFTER they vote to remove him, and only if the democrats decide not to go along with Matt Gaetz on this vote.

The “Speaker Recall” is in fact a bill that has been grought to the floor by Matt Gaetz and a few other republcians, that has almost NO support from his caucus, and can only win if it is supported by virtually ALL the democrats.

It is a funny way to object to the fear of someone introducing a bill that isn’t supported by your majority — introducing a bill that is opposed by almost all of your majority.

I don’t think 200+ Dems are in bed with Matt Gaetz.

Those are ALL Dem votes with Gaetz and his little band of renegades.

Jim Jordan has said from day one that he does NOT want the speaker’s job and will not accept it-he’s a lawyer-believes his best fit is the legal committees-so of course he wants McCarthy-or anyone else-to stay. At least he is being honest...
