Bed-Sty!! Now that’s a wonderful neighborhood to raise a family. (NOT)

I was born not too far from Bed-Sty (Ridgewood, early 1950s). When I was a kid it wasn't such a bad place. Bushwick too - that was where Jackie Gleason grew up.

Everything changed in the late 60s with the riots. In fact, my neighborhood petitioned the city to change their postal location from Brooklyn to Queens.

I still tell people I was born in Brooklyn though. At least, the Brooklyn of the 50s.

Yep, not so good in certain neighborhoods. Last time I went through Bushwick I saw the houses had security bars on the second-floor windows.
