Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) wants to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for working across the aisle to stop a government shutdown — but some Democrats are not on board.
Why it matters: As Axios has previously reported, Gaetz will likely need the vast majority of Democrats to vote with him, barring an unprecedented GOP uprising against McCarthy.
Driving the news: Gaetz said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that he planned to file a motion to vacate against McCarthy this week.
What they’re saying: "I'm not going to follow Matt Gaetz to Peter Luger's Steakhouse,” said Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), a member of the Progressive Caucus.
Cohen said McCarthy “shouldn't be put out” for putting a bipartisan stopgap funding bill on the floor: “He did the right thing … and I'll definitely vote not to vacate. I expect a good number of Democrats will as well."
"I see almost no way that Matt gets most of the Dems,” said one senior House Democrat, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Many will vote present if they don't vote No on [House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’] recommendation.” Yes, but: Jeffries has so far declined to weigh in on a motion to vacate, and some moderate Democrats who might be inclined to save McCarthy are keeping their powder dry for the moment.
"I'm withholding any comment or speculation until the hypothetical becomes the real," said Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.). "So far, we've seen a lot of hat but no cattle." “I’m waiting,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.). Many Democrats are expected to follow Jeffries’ lead: “Most will do whatever Hakeem tells us to do,” said the senior House Democrat.

Mnuchin tried to exercise the 25th Amendment after Jan 6 (by his own admission), Kushner and Ivanka betrayed Trump on numerous instances and cooperated with the January 6 committee... and Navarro and Ross were both Democrats until they were hired by Trump.
McConnell, Graham, & McCarthy are traitors, only looking out for their own bottom line. They are all a national disgrace. It is also a disgrace that their buddies in the House are teaming up to rid themselves of one of the few House members who gives a darn about his country.
Dems have no dog in this fight. They’re more than happy to stand on the sidelines and watch the Republicans tear each other up rather than lift a finger to help anyone.
Oh yes they do… they prefer McCarthy to a strong leader. If they though they’d get a better GOP leader that was sympathetic to their cause they’d take it.

Apparently the Democrats have read Napoleon Bonaparte.
“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
I HATE Axios.
But, when I think back, and full disclosure, I follow politics more than most, DID ANYONE OF US IN 2016, fully understand HOW CORRUPT, ROTTEN, TREASONOUS, CONIVING AND D E E P, THE Deep state was???
What a SNAKE PIT DC IS??
If anyone claims they knew the full extent...THEY ARE LYING.
So, along comes President Trump and, by golly, he falls prey to the most terrible, horrible conspiracy in AMERICAN HISTORY.
WOULD ANY OF US BE ABLE TO CONSTANTLY FACE WHAT PRESIDENT TRUMP HAD TO ENDURE.
I think not.
He has learned so much since that time.
Blah blah blah.
The January 6th Committee? What is/as that? Wasn’t that that thing where they found nothing? Was that that thing where they threw away all the made up “evidence” because it was t really a committee? Was that that thing where they hired a tv producer to run the whole thing? Was that that thing where they showed altered videos in an attempt to try and sway opinion?
Mnuchin did his job. I don’t care what Ross and Navarro were before they got hired, they did their jobs.
The Kushner’s cooperated with the Jan6 Committee. They must not have told them much.
Nice parentheses addition to create a fake headline when it appears from the article contents is about Gaetz himself seeking Democrat support.
C’mon, Gaetz is an attention hound.
Kevin gives the dems exactly what they want so damn right the dems and RINOs will save his arse!
Winning isn’t the issue here. I never expected Gaetz to win.
Follow through is the issue. He promised. He should deliver. Otherwise, he’s no different than McCarthy.
The problem with Gaetz, is that he is often just moving hot air around. It makes a big buzz, but that’s it.
And he continued, long after he left the White House to support and promote the very people who betrayed him. Over, and over, and over.
Birds of a feather flock together. Hence, McCarthy is a Democrat!
Neither Mitch nor Kevin will ever be loved, admired or applauded by the enemy side, just used.
Yet, most of Freepers on this thread side with the Dems. Chilling,
Siding with the Dems says more about you than it does Gaetz.
RE: Neither Mitch nor Kevin will ever be loved, admired or applauded by the enemy side, just used.
Mitch and McCarthy to Dems: But you promised me you’d respect me in the morning. You said you loved me. Lindsey and Mitt said to trust you.
