Harvard Crimson’s Implication That Word Limits Are Racist Is Ludicrous

Now that the Supreme Court has banned race-based affirmative action, Harvard University’s admissions office has come up with a creative work-around: asking more questions about students’ backgrounds on their applications.

But now the school newspaper’s editorial board has suggested the new essay prompts — which are designed to diversify the student body — are racist.

A September 12 Harvard Crimson editorial board op-ed argued that imposing word limits and asking students about intellectual experiences “has a disparate impact that falls heaviest on those from marginalized backgrounds.” And that hot take apparently “represents the majority view of The Crimson Editorial Board” and is “the product of discussions at regular Editorial Board meetings.”

College is supposed to help people learn how to think. Maybe a measure of how much the college education has benefited the student is to have them rewrite their admission essay after they graduate and see which one makes more sense.

The solution to Harvard’s dilemma is obvious: Admit the students whose writing is the least literate in expression of the shallowest ideas.

Yeah God forbid you get people with intellectual experiences at a university. I mean that is not what a university is about.

Harvard is hell bent on maintaining a quota system in admissions even if it is unconstitutional to do so. The government has neither the means nor the will to enforce the courts decision and honestly I don’t think it matters. Harvard’s brand depends on convincing hiring managers that their graduates are the best and the brightest. When it turns out they are not because they are affirmative action hires then the brand goes to hell. Granted every other elite school is doing the same thing but all that means is the whole industry will go to hell. Higher education isn’t any more and employers who want the best and brightest are going to have to figure out how to vet them on their own without Harvard’s help.

I remember when some Ivy League universities had the students return to the dorms, but all of the classes were still online. Some of the parents footing the enormous bill hopefully woke up to all of the indoctrination and insanity.

I had a problem with students who wrote too much until I explained this. Suppose your boss wants a two-page summary of a situation, but you give him a twenty-page report. You might think you are doing him a favor by providing more detail. However, he has to read dozens of reports and is paying you good money to do that sort of analysis yourself. What is he going to think about your analytical skills and your ability to follow directions? And what is he going to think about when it comes time to give you a raise or promotion?

Gosh, now what's that from? I searched but it's always sidetracked, somehow.

What I remember is a skit, I guess, where a guy tells everybody to "think". Then they all chant "THINK! THINK! THINK!" and he yells, "Shadddup!"

Don't understand the school's problem: All of the minority applicants will already "know" to begin their essay with, "As a [insert minority] child, I was often confronted with hateful White Supremacy..."
