BTW FREEMEN refers to persons born free, and FREEDMEN to persons born slave who one way or another gained their freedom.

Actually, they benefitted even during slavery, as bad as it was. The death of a slave with skills cost the master more than the death of a slave without skills, so the master had an incentive to keep the skilled slave healthy and working. And the skilled jobs were typically easier on the body than the unskilled field jobs — just like today.
