The offensive sentence is that AFTER THEY WERE EMANCIPATED some freedmen were able to use the skills they gained as slaves to their advantage.

Notice that this not what is said by Kamala Harris or by Tim Scott. They are saying that Florida teaches that SLAVES benefited from skills learned as slaves, when what is taught is that FREEDMEN benefited from skills learned as slaves.
**********
Actually, they benefitted even during slavery, as bad as it was. The death of a slave with skills cost the master more than the death of a slave without skills, so the master had an incentive to keep the skilled slave healthy and working. And the skilled jobs were typically easier on the body than the unskilled field jobs — just like today.

Tim Scott is a RINO democrat jr.

Lindsey Graham is a RINO democrat sr.

Nancy Mace was a RINO democrat jr., who is sensing the shifting winds and now positioning to be a conservative. I’ll take it, but I would prefer a leader.

From my knowledge of actual plantation life, reading archival material at Vicksburg and at Austin, including farm ledgers and other accounting records, slaves lived more or less communally. Maybe a slave farm boss would have some perks. And some slaves were trusted to sell marketable products of the farm and therefore to handle cash. We can suppose they, too, enjoyed some perks. But, these were the exceptions. Slaves did not generally benefit from any skills they acquired. Furthermore, masters had little incentive for slaves to gain skills. Thus, upon emancipation, Freedmen had few skills. The census of 1870 showed that almost all Freedmen were in occupations such as farm hand, laborer or household servant. Few were in occupations such as carpenter, wheelwright, or cobbler. The critics of the Florida curriculum suppose Florida is teaching that slaves benefited from any skills they learned. That would be misleading. But, when freed, the small stock of human capital certain of them had was important for getting started.

BTW from these records, we can form an estimate of the value of an arm, as these records include book and auction values of one-armed slaves, in addition to two-armed slaves. Also, the value of males as they transition from youth to mature adults to aged adults. A woman without a child was valued less than a counterpart man. But, a woman with a child was value about equally. Interesting stuff, but very politically incorrect.
