Hollywood doesn’t make movies to entertain. They make them to promote their world view. The story line is there just to get us interested so we will suspend our disbelief and accept the propaganda.
So? Lots of us Angelos did farm work back in the 1950s and 1960s. We picked green beans for a penny a pound back in 1962-1963. Not a black or brown face in the crowd. All poor whites. And it was hot Hot HOT work in those bean fields. Brother passed out in the field. But it was the only work available.
Jose, is that your crash helmet?
Hollywood’s writers must have cut a deal with their lawn rangers and maids on the pay scale if they do a pity story.
I grew up doing similar farm work in fields, from 12 to 18, through summer school breaks.
It was the only way I could earn money, and family dropped me off and picked me up, until I could drive.
Minimum wage added up and the field work kept me active and productive.
I like Michael Pena, but this sounds like another version of the movie that just came out about the Mexican janitor that claims he invented Flamin Hot Cheetos.
The Finger Man!
It is an excellent movie. Shows how anything is possible in America. What a great teacher is. Persistence. Hard work. Family. Faith.
Well, I worked on the program as a subcontractor for 36+ years and there were plenty of latinos working there for NASA. Some in very prominent positions. Some obvious social promotions. And, not every astronaut was Neal Armstrong. Not every one got to fly either.
The film is not about man conquering the limitations of humankind on a quest into the unknown, as all great space movies are. Rather, it is about a Mexican immigrant overcoming the obstacles of a racist society to live out his dream....The film makes this abundantly clear from the very beginning. If America is as racist as this movie claims, he never would have made it as far as he did, let alone allowed into space.
“””If America is as racist as this movie claims, this Mexican-American would have NEVER gone into space.”””
I think the movie is to convince the racists in the audience that he outsmarted us and got around our efforts to keep him out of our space program and then into our spaceships.
“I live in that very state - California!!”
It’s a beautiful state, been there once when I was 16. The state has been fundamentally transformed since then by the epidemic of Leftism.... as has other beautiful states. I’m seeing the disease trying to kill the patient.
It's a great story. People focused on just that aspect miss the overall theme.
Then all those new migrants coming up from Mexico and Latin American will surely help us get to Mars.
And dey waz allllll Kangs!
Nope. They were all losers in intertribal warfare. The victors would usually slaughter all the men and enslave all the women and children.
Then the Arabs established international slave trade.
The victors had the option of getting rid of the defeated by murdering them, or trading them to distant lands where they would never be seen again, and getting vast wealth into the bargain!
The very unlucky ones were fully emasculated and sent to Arabia. No modern day race problem in the world's #1 slave importer...
The unlucky ones went to sugar plantations in the Caribbean and Brazil, where they were worked to death in an average of about 10 years.
The less unfortunate ones made it to North America to pick cotton, most survived sometimes brutal treatment, and left descendants to contribute to our history and present.
At least they didn’t call it “The Astronaut Migrant.”
“It is about a Mexican immigrant overcoming the obstacles of a racist society to became the first ‘migrant farm worker’ to go into space.”
IOW, after arriving illegally, then living in bondage and working for peanuts for various entertainment industry millionaires, he got tired of doing horse**** hard labor under threat of being deported.
Most of those countries aren't at the point where intelligent people can move them forward. They need to get to a basic level where moral people are in charge first, and then intelligent people might be able to build on that foundation. Until then, the intelligent people will just be wasted.
Exactly! IMO everyone in the film was excellent.I don’t know what became of the other students other than “Net Head” but I can easily imagine them having done well in films and on TV.
