Very soon inner city stores are going to resurrect the old Service Merchandise model where examples of product are behind glass, you use a tablet to scan the bar code, you pay, and the order is delivered out front.

Stores will have to go to membership-only models like Costco or Sam's Club. Amazon has stores for its members now as well.

Was at our local (rural) grocery store service desk, today, and noticed the baby formula was in a locked case, behind the counter.

I asked, We have to do this….at this store, now? The young clerk said, Yes, ma’am. I said, How very sad. He agreed.
