I think you may be on to something.

Gavin Newsom is moving right (or at least a little bit less left) as he starts his presidential campaign:

1. He vetoed a California bill that would have required judges to view so-called gender identity "affirmation" (which really means gender denial, of course) as a plus in deciding child custody cases. His statement on this doesn't really pull back from the party-line Democrat encouragement of trans personality disorders, so my conclusion is that he wants to keep his lefty base but he's calculating that most people don't really approve of this stuff and that signing the bill would leave him vulnerable to Republican attacks.

2. He's encouraging the Supreme Court to allow cities to clear homeless encampments. He even said that just allowing the homeless to stay on the streets has "gone too far. People's lives are at risk."
