Democrats Are on a Winning Streak That Could Transform Our Politics
The Nation ^ | 9/22/2023 | By John Nichols

In the past few days, Democrats have secured majority control of the Pennsylvania House and moved within one seat of ending Republican control of the New Hampshire House. Those wins are not aberrations. They are the latest measures of a nationwide blue wave that has seen Democrats outperform expectations in 24 of 30 special elections for open state legislative seats this year. Legislative contests that were once considered local or regional races are being nationalized, as concerns about abortion rights and voting rights—two issues that are up for grabs in statehouses—are putting Republican candidates in a perilous position.

The numbers back up Williams’s assessment. On average, according to a fresh assessment by the data crunchers at FiveThirtyEight, Democrats are finishing 11 points better than the historic voting patterns of their districts would have predicted. That doesn’t mean that they are winning every race; sometimes, they are merely closing the gap in heavily Republican districts. But in other cases, Democrats are flipping Republican seats and raising the prospect that they will take control of legislative chambers that are currently controlled by the GOP.

There are reasons beyond fraud.

I don't believe that. No president in history ever got 74 million votes. This is a record vote total for a presidential election, and we have no doubt these are *REAL* votes from real voters.

But Biden getting 81 million, the year all the safeguards on elections were removed?

No. Didn't happen. Barack Obama represented the highest voter enthusiasm for a Democrat in history, and he only got to 65 million. Biden beats Barack Obama, the most popular Democrat president in our lifetime, by 16 million votes?

No. Didn't happen.

And good luck with that one, BTW. Even if the Amendment were repealed, no state would actually take away a woman’s right to cast a vote. It just won’t happen.

It was a mistake to overturn Roe vs Wade, as simple as that.

Disagree. It was horrible law, based on feelings and not legislation, and it never should have been accepted law ever.

But the timing was bad, and then people came out of the woodwork to push draconian over the top legislation on the topic? Now that was dumb.

They should have took the win and moved slowly.

I agree. We're stuck with it. So that's the rule of the game. We have to be more emotional and connect to the ladies. If you don't do that, you're not going to get elected.

And yes, that means more socialism.

Ronald Reagan was the best Republican at connecting to the voters. A lot of it is because he was a former actor.

You're not going to get the votes from the ladies with that approach.

OK, then, I’m fine with state aid going to poor women who couldn’t get an abortion.

Oh, wait, that’s not what they’re talking about, correct?

“We have to be more emotional and connect to the ladies.”

There are a lot of hard core conservative ways to get that done.

It requires a bit of courage because when you start talking about Democrats causing crime (for example) some folks get nervous about the race card....

In addition most women really don’t like war with enemies all over the world...if you are not a Neocon you don’t either....

Just look at Justin Trudeau’s Canada to see where we are heading next. It’s likely that Gavin Newsom is our next President.

Ok seriously, this was a very strange time for the country. People were home bored. I think they made it easy to vote by filling out a piece of paper. What else can you do when you are struck at home?

That I can agree with. Florida’s great 2022 results came AFTER a 15-week ban went into effect. Then, this year, they passed a 6-week ban. While I won’t lift a finger to repeal the latter, I still suspect that, unless the Dumb-O-Crats actually start creating goo lags and mass murdering people, that the Florida GOP will lose some seats in the legislature in 26.

No. But the Democrats are better at lying. And they have the mainstream media to back them up.

That could very well be. Women will come out in droves to vote for Newsom, because he’s handsome and charismatic.

19th Amendment.

There are a lot of stupid amendments. I think the 24th did more damage than the 19th, because it created the opportunity for politicians to bribe non taxpayers with taxpayer money. Our fiscal troubles pretty much started in 1963, because people started demanding government money be spent to satisfy this newly created group who would always vote for people who promised to spend money on them.

The 26th was stupid. It was emotionally driven, and didn't do the nation any good, because most 18 year olds are stupid, and don't learn enough about how the real world works until they reach 21, where they would have been on their own for 3 years and actually paid taxes and bills.

The 16th was stupid. The 18th was stupid.

*MOST* of the Amendments after the first 10 were mistakes. The 14th is the most legally abused amendment of them all. It has given us Abortion on demand, homosexual marriage, Anchor Babies, banned prayer in Schools, and a whole host of other legal disasters.

It's intentions were good, but it's verbiage is so full of holes it can mean whatever Judges want it to mean.

15 week ban is reasonable. 6 week is not. Most Americans would prefer 15 to 20 week ban on abortion. Not a total ban.

Ronald Reagan was the best Republican at connecting to the voters. A lot of it is because he was a former actor.

I have always believed his experience as an actor was greatly helpful to him as a president. He knew how to read a crowd and he knew how to communicate.

I don't think we can stop him. So we need to replace our Justices on the SCOTUS before he becomes President.

And Trudeau’s another one that’s boyishly handsome and charismatic.

Canadian Liberal women: “Oo, that Trudeau is so dreamy, eh?” “Oh, yah! Let me take you to the polls!”

All the Republican politicians should watch his old tapes and learn how to emulate his style.
