Most conservatives prattle about family values. However, the truth is that it is only rhetoric for many. This problem did not start with Lauren Bohbert. Two men regarded as conservative heroes two generations ago were homosexual: Roy Cohn and J. Edgar Hoover. Several high profile actors who were vocally conservative were serial adulterers; Gary Cooper and John Wayne, for example. John Schmitz, a California congressman and Bircher, had a long standing affair with a young woman, despite being married and a vocal traditional Catholic. Various evangelical leaders who were strong social conservatives had extramarital affairs, financial corruption, and alcohol problems: Jerry Falwell, Jr., and Jimmy Swaggart, for example.
