A TWA pilot who narrowly averted collisions with hijacked planes headed to attack the World Trade Center and the US Capitol on Sept. 11, 2001, is being remembered 22 years later as an unsung hero.
The little-known incidents are buried in the history of 9/11 when 2,977 people were killed at the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and on the four planes commandeered by Islamic terrorists.
The pilot on TWA Flight 3 took “evasive action” twice before safely landing — first to avoid colliding with United Flight 175, which struck the World Trade Center, and then Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, according to a New York-based flight attendant who was on the crew.
“There were two near-misses,” she told The Post.
The unflappable pilot was never memorialized, or even publicly identified, in the 9/11 Commission Report or other accounts.
Yet to the passengers on that fateful flight, he is unforgettable.
“He saved our lives, without a doubt,” said retired FDNY Lt. Charlie Hubbard, who was one of them.
TWA’s Boeing 767 took off from JFK for St. Louis at 8:47 a.m. – almost exactly when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. — the first to strike the World Trade Center.
Commanding the cockpit was “George,” said the flight attendant, who could recall only his first name.
As the TWA jet ascended in the clear, blue sky, passengers spotted a shocking sight – the World Trade Center on fire.
Minutes later, the jet confronted United 175 as it headed toward NYC from Boston, the flight attendant said. “We were scissoring up and down,” she recalled, referring to a defensive maneuver.

Um, I see a little bit of a time issue with this account. At the speeds jets fly...several/a few/minutes later? I was sitting at my 'puter at home when the first plane hit, and had to sit for a minute. I then got to work, just in time to see the second plane hit.
Just sayin'
Wow… never heard this story before.
Yep, Shrub Jr. was just a nepo baby who felt entitled to the White House because his daddy was president.
I’m still angry at Obomination for what he did to our country!
In what way, if any, did the 9/11 incident make the "presidency" of BO possible?
It flushed out W as the deceptive and arrogant NWO RINO he is, among many other things...
Altering your flight level in a humongous sky is not “dodging”.
The duty of an airplane captain is first to the passengers and crew of the plane and second to the integrity of the plane which insures the first duty. No way would he put the passengers, crew and craft in danger purposely. He’s a hero.
I thought of that. We don't know what the two planes would have crashed into. Maybe they were over water.
I like to remind people that after the aircraft were all grounded that there were found stashed on some of them box cutters. So it appears there were more targets never hit.
And now the US has been flooded with moslems by various presidents to our detriment.
Mecca and Medina should be radioactive smoking craters so hot no one can get within 100 miles of them for a thousand years.
Like Clinton, Obama, Biden, McCain, Romney and so many more government elected officials. We're in heap big trouble right now in America.
And he lied that he was a conservative.
Exactly. You fly (or do pretty much anything) as you are trained, and as Duty demands.
This is a real world trolley problem with no time to think it through. He did exactly what his training and Duty called for.
I don’t fault him for that, but I do wonder what path would have been “best”. (Whatever the heck that means!)
Contrast that with the people who did have time to think it through did. The only thing in the air that wasn’t US military was the bin Lauden family being flown out of the US. Iraq was punished for what Saudi Arabia did. We showed weakness. The scourge of islam was empowered. “We” elected a muslim president and the rest is the end of history.
I suppose that’s more recoverable than some of the alternatives.
Would the disappearance of meccah medina and Riyadh cripple and ultimately destroy islam, or inflame it? True there would be a crimp in the world’s oil supply, but we could still drill through glass...
What path would result in the fewest deaths and less slavery and misery?
Hmmm. Not quite a trolley problem.
In a trolley problem neither the passengers nor the trolley driver (or switch man depending on version) are at the slightest risk.
Saudi individuals did it. That may have included some in the Saudi government, or not. But I doubt that it was Saudi Government policy to attack a major source of their income.
