The big semantic problem is the definition of “work” and “mask”. If someone is talking to me face to face and is wearing an industrial grade dust mask and sneezes in my direction,,,I would say the “mask” “worked”...by preventing almost all the spittle from hitting my face. Was all of the infected particles prevented from escaping,, NO, they were not. If some think that using those flimsy masks will stop all viral spreading...NO WAY. If some think masks can lessen the chance of B getting it from A over a very short exposure time...maybe. It would be great if the interviewer could ask specific questions and the non-expert in aerosol viral epidemiology would be more specific as to what studies show “masks” “work” and to what degree.Everyone would be served better.

There are studies showing that masks reduce COVID transmission. Whether it’s enough to justify wearing them (given the negatives that come along with wearing masks) is another question.
