Russia defies sanctions with homemade Sukhoi Superjet
Asia Times ^

A Russian passenger jet built almost entirely with domestically manufactured components completed its first test flight on August 29, a launch that gave Yakovlev Design Bureau and United Aircraft Corporation’s (UAC) respective shares on the Moscow Exchange a buoyant lift.

Designed by Yakovlev and manufactured by UAC at its Komsomolsk-na-Amure factory, the new Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ-100) is a narrow-body regional aircraft with a range of 4,578 kilometers (2,472 nautical miles) that can carry 87 to 108 passengers depending on seat configurations.

It aims to compete with Brazil’s narrow-body, short to medium-range Embraer E190 on global markets.

During the test flight, which lasted 54 minutes, the SSJ-100 climbed to a maximum elevation of 3,000 meters and reached a speed of 343 kilometers per hour, according to local reports. Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade said that the stable operation of all systems and the controllability and stability of the aircraft in flight were all confirmed.

The original SSJ-100, constructed largely with foreign parts and components, first flew in 2008. About 40 imported systems and components have been replaced with Russia-made alternatives in the new version.

The indigenously-made parts include the fuselage, avionics, flight control system and auxiliary power unit as well as power supply, air conditioning and fire protection equipment in the plane’s cabin.

SaM-146 engines built in a joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines of France and the Saturn subsidiary of Russia’s United Engine Corporation (UEC) were used to speed up the test program, but they will be replaced with fully domestic-made PD-8 engines produced by UEC-Saturn “in the near future,” according to Russian media reports. Manufactured in both France and Russia, SaM-146 engines powered the SSJ-100 from the start.

“Homemade”! now that there IS funny! how many major countries around the globe do not manufacture some type of plane? our planes made in the US of A...are they considered “homemade” too! this headline would be more appropriate for country like Zimbabwe, not Russia.

Russia not only defies but also laughs at Western sanctions. When you consider the damage the sanctions have inflicted upon Western consumers, the boon for Russian alliance efforts and non effect on the Russian economy, the sanctions have been a major, major success for the RUSSIANS.

I think that Boeing airliners are pretty much “homemade” in that they use mostly parts and systems manufactured in the US. However, some may use Rolls Royce or Safran engine options.

Boeing has suppliers and subassemblies produced all over the planet. They’re assembled here, but the parts are sn international quilt.

Cute but I’m not so sure about flying in a Russian made plane.

If only most of the countries in the world would sanction us, we could bring all manufacturing back home and make America great again. :-)

Their history with passenger jets is srriously spotty. The TU-104 for example was a deathtrap, 20% of them being destroyed in crashes.

I refer you sir, to my post #10 about The TU-104. We make the occasional bad plane, but nobody’s ever written a folk song set to Chopin’s death march about how deadly American planes are. The TU-104 had such a tune.

Sounds like some sort of a problem involving communism... Communism is gone from Russia now.

Communism is gone from Russia, but authoritarianism is still there and making many of the same mistakes communism did.

I would think your argument would be stronger if you used an example of an airliner that was slightly newer than a TU-104. After all, it did come into service in 1956, 67 years ago. At that time, jet powered airliners were very new, it was only the second such one put into service.

I am sure that less than 50% in the American planes is actually US made.

Per the Aviation Safety Network:

“Russia ranks second in the 25 worst regions in the world by the number of fatal accidents from 1945 until now.”

Communism is gone from Russia, but authoritarianism is still there and making many of the same mistakes communism did.

Assuming that Russia is an authoritarian state (your assumption), why is it your/our business what form of government the Russians choose for themselves?

And, what are the "same mistakes" they are making?

“Russia not only defies but also laughs at Western sanctions. When you consider the damage the sanctions have inflicted upon Western consumers, the boon for Russian alliance efforts and non effect on the Russian economy, the sanctions have been a major, major success for the RUSSIANS.”

I remember the rocket engines used by Orbital, I think. The Russians gave us performance numbers for them. Our engineers those numbers were impossible and that the Russians were lying. So we went there and watched the testing and they got the same numbers. We said that they rigged the test equipment. So Russia said: “Take one back to America and test it on your equipment.” We did, and we PROVED that the Russians were LYING the whole time as the engines did even better than the Russians had claimed.
