“More than four hours into the testimony, lead defense attorney Tony Buzbee grilled the witness until he became flustered about why he turned whistleblower. He attempted to link Mateer to establishment Republicans, specifically political backers of George P. Bush, grandson and nephew of two former presidents, who unsuccessfully challenged Paxton last year.
“You were staging a coup, weren’t you?” Buzbee said.”
“Mateer — Paxton’s former first assistant and a member of the right-wing Federalist Society — has allied with Paxton enemies like Texans for Lawsuit Reform and George P. Bush.
“You called the FBI? That’s how you protected your friend?” Buzbee asked.
“In order to help your friend — a guy who had given you a real plumb of a job — instead of asking you some questions, you circled up and decided to go to the FBI,” he went on.”
