Two people were charged with looting a home damaged by Hurricane Idalia in Florida’s Big Bend region, as residents’ concerns grew that burglars could be tempted to hit other hurricane-ravaged homes since law enforcement is stretched thin in the remote, wooded area along the Gulf Coast.
Some residents of Horseshoe Beach, Florida, one of the communities hardest hit after Idalia made landfall Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane, urged law enforcement to set up checkpoints where people would have to show identification in order to get into the town. Marina worker Kerry Ford had high praise for local law enforcement’s response to the hurricane but wished more would be done to keep out people who don’t belong in Horseshoe Beach.
A man and a woman from Palmetto, Florida, almost 200 miles south of where Idalia made landfall, were arrested Wednesday after an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission heard noises coming from outside a home in Horseshoe Beach. The officer found the man and woman loading up items from the waterfront home into a rented pickup truck. One of the suspects told deputies that the homeowner had given him permission to remove items from the house on stilts. But the homeowners told deputies when contacted that they had done no such thing, according to a statement from the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office. Each suspect was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling during an emergency, grand theft and trespassing, with bails set for each at $1 million

A million-dollar bail is ok if the alternative is getting shot.
And that, George Gascon, is how it’s done.

The town I grew up in is not far from Dixie County, the county seat is called Cross City, years ago, it had a reputation for a wild place where stuff like looting would have been met with people who shot first and asked questions later.
One year when I was in high school, we beat the crap out of their basketball team I was playing on, as we left town a bunch of trunks sped up and caught our bus and pelted us with rocks, cracked a few windows, etc...
It’s good to see they haven’t changed much in 45-50 years.
Oops. They picked the wrong da*n rec room!
My wife’s grandfather deserted his family when my father in law was 12. When my wife was about 14, they found out the derelict was still alive and living in Old Town, not far from Cross City.
He and my FIL actually hit it off and my wife’s family moved there a year or two later.
Between the redneck’s and the snakes and gators, that’s a hard place for a northerner to move to. They lasted a year and moved back to Michigan.
My in-Law’s inhabited his house on the Suwanee River. We spent a week there about 25 years ago before they sold it.
My father had a good friend that owned a place on a canal in Suwanee where the river empties into the Gulf, you would turn at Old Town and drive until you came to the Gulf.
We would fish and use a net at times to catch the mullet up in one of the creeks before the tide changed.
I loved the red roe inside some of the mullet, the white roe I didn’t care for, but the red with some scrambled eggs was very tasty.
The actual mullet after it was cleaned we smoked them, ate some and froze the rest.
Back then and I’m sure it’s still like this but a stranger moving to town was looked at with skepticism until people got to know you, for someone from the North and a different accent, combined with the environment could be hard to adjust to.
Hey thugs and their people, here is a clue: Florida, Texas, or Ohio are not California, Illinois, or New York.
The DOJ and FBI are going to get involved to prosecute those local cops
There is a reason that part of the US is called “The Redneck Riviera”
EXCELLENT
Seems more than fair to me. Looters should be shot on sight, while not as bad as arson, it’s right up there. Taking advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable takes an especially depraved mindset. There’s no way around that.
My parents house was burgled while they were away attending a funeral. In those days, newspaper obituaries still included the name and address or at least hometown of the family members. So low life crooks could deduce who would be out of town for the services. God forgive me, but I’d have shot the MFers that did that and sleep like a baby.

He was on tv a few years ago..And said if anyone breaks into your house..shoot first and make sure he is dead.DRAG HIM TO THE FRONT yard….call me and I will call the coroner to come pick him up..
He also said for women to arm themselves…he would get them free fire arms training…
