Nikolay Nikolayevich Amursky, Graf Muravyov, Muravyov also spelled Muraviev, (born Aug. 11 [Aug. 23, New Style], 1809, St. Petersburg, Russia—died Nov. 18 [Nov. 30], 1881, Paris, France), Russian statesman and explorer whose efforts led to the expansion of the Russian Empire to the Pacific. In 1860 he planted the Russian flag at what was to become the port of Vladivostok.
A lieutenant general in the Russian army, Muravyov was appointed governor-general of eastern Siberia in 1847. Despite the opposition of many in the tsarist government who feared the reaction of the Chinese, he vigorously pursued the exploration and settlement of Siberia north of the Amur River. In the period 1854–58 he led a number of expeditions down the Amur, during the last of which, having obtained plenipotentiary powers from the tsar, he concluded the Treaty of Aigun with China (1858). This pact recognized the Amur as the boundary between Russia and China and greatly expanded Russian territory in Siberia. For his role Muravyov was granted the title of Count Amursky. The peninsula on which Vladivostok lies still bears his name.
Keep in mind that this treaty was granted without military action on the part of the Russians. Vladivostok did not exist until after the treaty ... so how will China compensate Russia for gaining a fully developed city ~160 years after giving up the territory?
Of course, these are the same people that think the US should just give Alaska back to Russia, since tsarist Russia is the equivalent to Putin's Russia.
China long resented the Russian acquisitions of 1858 and 1860, which the Chinese considered to be an example of the unequal treaties forced upon a weakened China. The Russians extended their influence over Manchuria to Harbin and southward to the port of Dairen (Dalian).
The Chinese and Russian Empires both claim those chunks of land, but there weren’t many/any Han Chinese or Russians living there at the time (pre-1900s). I believe the natives are similar to Eskimos, but they were few and without military power so had no say in the matter.
Chicoms gave a bunch of territory to Russia about 30 years ago.
Russia was arming Chicoms, selling them military tech etc…

China and Russia are allies, perhaps closer than the U.S. and Britain. Both countries engage in extensive joint military exercises. Their overseas allies are the same set of Marxist and radical Muslim states from Cuba to Iran. Both nations engage in extensive trade, and the manufacturing based Chinese economy compliments the raw materials and agriculture based Russian economy.
The Western elite would like to see a split between the two powers, who have expanded the BRICS reach into South America, brought Saudi Arabia out of the Western orbit, and have been challenging Western dominance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Newsweek is engaging in wishful thinking.
