On June 23, a study on the underreporting of firearm ownership was published in the Journal ” Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology.” The title is “Predicting potential underreporting of firearm ownership in a nationally representative sample,” hereafter referred to as the ‘study.’ The study indicated the number of people who refuse to report they are firearm owners, who have been called “shy” firearms owners, are about as numerous as firearms owners willing to identify themselves as such.
The full study is behind a paywall online. Allison E. Bond, the principal author of the study, was very kind and sent a copy for me to read for this article.
The study used a sample of 3500 people who were chosen to be a representative of United States adults. The number of adults in the United States at the time of the survey was about 258 million. They found 34.6% of those surveyed admitted to owning firearms, about 89 million people. The study estimated another 29.6% of respondents were likely to be “shy” gun owners. This would put the total number of gun owners in the US at roughly 64% of adults, or 166 million people.
The number of “shy” firearms owners has been a major uncertainty overhanging the study of firearms ownership and its effects in the United States. The study approached the uncertainty from the perspective of interest in understanding and preventing suicide in the nation’s population. While the study acknowledged 50% of suicides in the US involve firearms, it did not mention the percentage involving firearms has fallen from about 60% in the early and mid-1990s.

Really?! No idea?
That is a quote from the study. It is accurate. Sure, they have ideas, plenty of them.
But they accurately say, from their survey, they cannot know what the reason for each individual response is.
There are many specific reasons why a person would refuse to say they own guns. Worries about theft, confiscation, social opprobrium, personal interactions.
Well duh. We always knew when they said something ridiculous like “only 35% report being gun owners” that it wasn’t a true representation of what percent actually were gun owners. Only 35% would admit to a complete stranger over the phone that they were gun owners.
None of my doctors has ever asked me about guns.

Mine has. Said his wife was interested and how should he start her off. I mentioned rentals and .22 cal revolver for starters. I already knew he carried so the questions didn’t bother me.
Alas, she had a baby and her interests changed.
Love being in small town Kansas.
I know liberals as well as many conservatives who own guns.
They just don’t tell ANYONE.
I have never owned one of course....
Who does these studies and what is their method?
And what percentage of the people are going to tell a stranger how many guns they have?
20 or so years ago our son’s pediatrician something like that. He got a little huffy when I said I considered that a borderline boundary violation, that he wasn’t a household safety expert.
We were aging out anyway, that was the last time we went to that practice.
It was published in "Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology".
Method: take a representative sample of adults in the United States, 3500 people, from a group who previously agreed to participate.
Ask them questions.
Use the answers from people who admit they are gun owners to estimate those who you think are likely gun owners, but do not admit it.
Your question: And what percentage of the people are going to tell a stranger how many guns they have? is what they were trying to get a handle on. The number surprised them.
It is clear that the racists, MIVs, perverts, pedos, and homos have been purchasing guns in preparation for the oncoming bloodshed...
THEY KEEP PUSHING US-—AND THEY WILL FIND OUT THE HARD WAY.
This is as stupid as the ‘vehicle insurance’ crap I keep getting-—
” Need to renew my membership”
1. I NEVER HAD SUCH A MEMBERSHIP
2. MY CAR IS A 1979 Buick station wagon I bought from a private party-—no warranty—in August 1981-—42 years ago.
223,000 miles +++.
3. MY TRUCK is a 1979 4 speed dually 1 ton Chevy 454 gas I bought used in April of 1986....NO WARRANTY. It has over 348,000 miles on it—and I put on 250,000 of those miles hauling horses. 37 years ago.
ALL of the above would disqualify my vehicles from such ‘breakdown insurance’.
I do alot of maintenance myself-—AND I have an “OLD IRON MECHANIC” who takes good care of me & my vehicles.
I wrote a nasty response on their letter & mailed it back to them—calling it a SCAM & threatening to give the data to the State AG.
THANK YOU FOR THE NEW TERMINOLOGY
Truck is 1976 model....typing too fast.
They want to provoke unrest and a Civil war ... While they are in control of the Government.
They want chaos. They see it as an opportunity to overthrow everything and put them in charge of everything.
They want us to become Venezuela, Cuba, Cambodia, China, the Soviet Union.
They believe a few tens of millions of deaths is a small price to pay to achieve... the destruction of the United States.
