No, this person appears to be someone who is from the outside and may be a reformer.

What is the attraction of the “hard left”, anyway?

People get the government they deserve, and sadly, that includes the USA.

That was Augusto Pinochet's practice in Chile, and it worked.
Chile, for decades was the economic and political model for South America. I lived and worked for over 5-years in Chile and it was the only country in SA where it was a bad idea to offer a bribe to a Carabinero, (police).
Lately Chile has been swirling around the drain heading back to the Communist crap-hole it was before Pinochet.

These Central American nations should be jewels. I mean, spectacular climate, natural resources...why would they want to come to the U.S. and freeze to death?

New people are born there every minute who lack any experience with communism and are thus easily duped when they are of age to vote by which time they are eager to vote against everything their parents stand for. So, there is a never ending supply of dupes for the Marxists. At the same time, the more leftwing policies are put into place, the more the older, wiser people flee the country. This leaves even fewer people to oppose the leftists and to teach the young. The next generation gets a little duller.
, and so on.
