Victor Davis Hanson: The Great China-American Abyss
American Greatness ^ | 17 Aug, 2023 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 08/17/2023 6:14:43 AM PDT by MtnClimber

One way to get along with China is to deal with it exactly the way it deals with the U.S.

Imagine if the United States treated China in the same way it does us?

What if American companies simply ignored Chinese copyrights and patents, and stole Chinese ideas, inventions, and intellectual property, as they pleased and with impunity?

What if the American government targeted Chinese industries by dumping competing American export products at below the cost of production—to bankrupt Chinese competitors and corner their markets?

What would the communist Chinese government do if a huge American spy balloon lazily traversed continental China—sending back to the United States photographic surveillance of Chinese military bases and installations?

How would China react to American stonewalling any explanation, much less refusing to apologize for such an American attack on Chinese sovereignty?

Envision a U.S. high-security virology lab in the Midwest, run by the Pentagon, allowing the escape of an engineered, gain-of-function deadly virus.

Instead of enlisting world cooperation to stop the spread of the virus, the American government would lie that it sprung up from a local bat or wild possum.

Washington would then make all its relevant military scientists disappear who were assigned to the lab, while ordering a complete media blackout.

America would forbid Chinese scientists from contacting their American counterparts involved in the lab, despite the deaths of more than 1 million Chinese from the American-manufactured disease.

And what if during the first days of the pandemic Washington had quietly prevented all foreign travel to the United States, while keeping open one-way direct flights from America to major Chinese cities?

How would Beijing respond if American biotech company warehouses were discovered in rural China with unsecured vials of deadly viruses and pathogens?

One of the major problems is many of America’s ruling class admire the Chinese and the Chinese system, and want to help them. Another large group has simply been bought off by the Chinese.

What are these Chinese ideas, inventions and intellectual property?

If there is financial incentive, people will do it. The fact that we don't has as much to do with the lack of anything China has worth stealing as it does with our mindset toward China.

I’m in favor of making things in the USA if it can be done competitively.

I’m also in favor of financially balanced trade.

I hopefully will be replacing my home page with a suggested Congressional candidate platform.

At the state level, capping or otherwise controlling property taxation is important. We have to be able to wait the leftists out until our replacements recognize they walk in the same ‘shoes’ as us and need to vote accordingly.

What if the US built the same number of coal fired power plants as the Chinese do?

The Neocon WEF masters of the universe thought they could recruit China to one day become an adversary to Russia and play the role that Ukraine is playing today. This was the entire purpose of Biden’s back channel China dealings. An example of the delusional leading the delusional

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

What if almost monthly China discovered an American military operative teaching incognito at a major Chinese university or among the ranks of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army?

Would China object if an American femme fatale agent was sleeping with a high-ranking Chinese official of the Chinese communist politburo?

Or what if one of the chauffeurs of its top ranking Chinese officials was a nearly two-decade-long American agent?

And Prof Hanson goes on tto answer these questions that not a single MSM reporterette will even consider.

—”What are these Chinese ideas, inventions and intellectual property?”

‘There is no greater danger than underestimating your opponent.’
Lao Tzu

That said, there are many technologies where the Chinese are world leaders.

Take a look at CATL, they mostly own EV battery manufacturing. Yes, the origin is dark, but they are on top for now.

Yes, they have a different playbook and their copying/theft is massive.

The product teardown industry is everywhere.

Ever notice the day after a new iPhone you can read reviews about chip count, manufacturing processes, design improvements...

Here is a teardown artist in action...

That's manufacturing. What innovations in EV battery manufacturing have the Chinese developed or are practicing that it would profit us to steal?

No one disputes the CCP's ability to wave away the kind of bureaucratic controls and expenses which repress such manufacturing capabilities in the US, but the article is about intellectual property and inventions. What are the Chinese doing in terms of inventions and innovations that we want to copy? I'm not trying to underestimate the Chinese, but so far all I see is the same kind of economic challenge which we imagined from Japan in the '80s - better efficiency at reduced prices, but no real "they are always one step ahead of us" challenge. That's the challenge many nations face when they look at the US and its technology lead.

Khrushchev was right about the communists taking over and us selling them the rope to hang ourselves. He was just wrong about which country would be taking over America with the blessings of the: US politicians, US government-deep state, US military, US(I say that tongue in cheek) corporations, US academia, US elites etc...

All these fools think they can ride the tiger and be the last one eaten. All will be put up against the wall by their beloved Chicoms and dealt with screaming but we support you, we love you and the Chicoms will respond, we don’t need you useful idiots anymore...

—”What innovations in EV battery manufacturing have the Chinese developed or are practicing that it would profit us to steal?”

“CATL to produce world’s fastest EV battery that offers 400km driving range with just 10 minutes of charging, to keep prices affordable for ‘ordinary consumers’
Hope more ‘ordinary consumers’ can ‘enjoy the dividends arising from technological innovations’, CATL’s chief scientist says
New batteries to have 4C charging capabilities, which means they can be fully charged in just 15 minutes”

“CATL is a runaway leader in the EV battery industry worldwide. It installed 112 gigawatt-hours of batteries in the first six months of 2023, a 562 per cent year-on-year increase. The company had a market share of 36.8 per cent in the first half, followed by BYD’s 15.7 per cent.”

Interesting - I was not aware that China is now leading battery technology innovation. Thanks for this info - I stand corrected and now, concerned.

There is much to be concerned about, beyond batteries.

“Imagine if the United States treated China in the same way it does us?

What if American companies simply ignored Chinese copyrights and patents, and stole Chinese ideas, inventions, and intellectual property, as they pleased and with impunity?”

And just would those pieces of IP be? They Chinese have developed virtually nothing on their own. They’ve stolen ALL OF IT. What was brought to Chine in an effort to lower production costs was just flat out stolen. Now they have the tech. Nyah nyah.

“What if the American government targeted Chinese industries by dumping competing American export products at below the cost of production—to bankrupt Chinese competitors and corner their markets?”

The US could never do this without massive distortions caused by insane levels of gov’t subsidy. When China was interested in becoming a producer of goods sold in the US, the government underwrote the costs of achieving production capability. Goods were sold at grievous losses, something a US company could not tolerate for long. Good produced in the US could never withstand the liability for product defects that Chinse made stuff could.

I do not think the US could ever do what Victor is explaining/expounding upon.
