A teenage terror suspect charged with attempting to build a weapon of mass destruction was arrested at the home of a Philadelphia defense attorney who sought the Democrat nomination for a judge’s role, sources have claimed.
The 17-year-old, who has not been named, was allegedly communicating with a Jordanian Islamic State affiliate, and planning a ‘catastrophic terrorist attack’, when he was arrested on Friday the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office revealed.
Sources linked the arrest to Friday’s FBI raid on the Woodbine Avenue home of Qawi Abdul-Rahman who unsuccessfully ran in this year’s Democratic primary for Common Pleas Court judge, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer and phillymag.com.
Police moved in after US Customs told them that ‘14 international shipments of military and tactical gear’ had arrived at the seven-bedroom mansion in the city’s leafy Wynnefield neighborhood.
‘Among the items he purchased were tactical equipment, wiring, chemicals and devices often used as remote detonators,’ FBI Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire said at the news conference.
‘He had not only taken steps in acquiring those items and materials that are commonly used in improvised explosive devices, but that he had also taken steps to start putting potential devices together.’
The teen has been charged with offenses involving weapons of mass destruction, criminal conspiracy, arson, causing or risking catastrophe, attempt to commit criminal mischief, possession of an instrument of crime, and reckless endangerment of another person,’ prosecutors said.
He has been charged as a juvenile but prosecutors are seeking to have him tried in an adult court.
