I know they are dumb, but they really can’t be that stupid, can they? Makes me think some of this is orchestrating from above in there just following the orders.

Trial? What for? They already made up their minds that the accused are guilty and need to spend the rest of their lives in prison. Or maybe, just to get a jump om things, they should just begin construction on the gallows.
