Their analysis assumed bloated, progressive government and the DC military-industrial complex as the baseline for American Government, and then after that, NR writers simply hoped Democrats would behave themselves.
Any conservative who wished to make the slightest change would likely be called "mean" and aggressive by NR. They took this off the deep-end with Trump.
That is essentially the GOP establishment as well. They are every bit as leftist as the Democrats, they just want their taxes lowered is the only difference. National Embarrassment hardly speaks for conservatives anymore, they are a Republican propaganda rag.
