Six people have died after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Channel.
A spokeswoman from French coastal authority Premar said between five and 10 others are missing, AFP reports.
British and French coastguards have rescued around 50 people from the vessel, authorities said.
A number of people were seen being brought off a lifeboat, some on stretchers, in Dover, but the extent of injuries and exact numbers remain unclear.
Ten people were taken to Dover and several more to Calais.
A passing ship first raised the alarm that an overloaded boat was in difficulty off the coast of Sangatte, near Calais in the early hours of Saturday, French authorities said.
When the French lifeboat arrived, they found numerous people in the sea with some screaming for help. The Dover lifeboat, which was already in the Channel dealing with another boat carrying migrants, joined the rescue operation.
Rescuers are still scouring the water for survivors and bodies - often boats are so overloaded it is difficult to tell how many people are on them. A French Navy aircraft and a helicopter have been deployed to help the search.
Although the incident happened in French territory, with these types of operations British and French rescue teams work together to rescue as many people as possible.
A volunteer, who was on one of the rescue boats, told Reuters news agency migrants were using shoes to bail water out of the sinking boat.
Anne Thorel said there had been "too many" people on board.

What puzzles me is: I’m certain everyone on that boat knew the thought “I want to go to England.” But never in one million years would any one of them think “Does England want me to come?”

Africa has been suffering from a centuries long Africa.
It’s a risk you take doing something illegal.
It apparently cost the British taxpayers about £2 or £3 million pounds per asylum seeker (or illegal immigrant). So sadly enough they just saved about £48 million pounds or so.
The Brits have received over 100,000 of these ‘asylum seekers’ this year and most are young fighting age single men... Fleeing from the European country of Albania and then the European country of France. The Brits should just start charging the European Union the £2 or £3 million pounds that their taxpayers are coughing up to feed, cloth and house these ‘asylum seekers’.
I bet a lot of the NGOs are fronts for a web of moneyed entities that have figured out how to well-obscure the audit trail. And hide it behind do-good-ism.
The leadership is welcoming these people with open arms over the objections of their own citizens. Just like our leaders are doing the same over the objections of Legacy Americans.
