The naval rank “CDR” is an O-5, same as a LTC/LtCol in other branches of service.
The title Commander is applied by other branches of service to the HMFIC of any particular unit, however large or small.
(Yeah, I know: the HMFIC is really a guy with a whole lot of stripes on his sleeve ... but we gotta pretend ...)
Laughing at the thought of the “Washington HMFICs” (For lurkers who don’t know: Head M*****F***** In Charge.) And the guy with a whole lot of stripes on his sleeve is the sergeant major, who has become a non-commissioned officer and has tons more experience than the commissioned officers who outrank him, because the commissioned officers have to keep getting promoted quickly to avoid retirement.
