When an assertion is made by someone else without a citation or reference, I often ask for such a citation or reference.

Totally agree. Which is why, once a citation is given, I often look to bolster such citation with additional sources.

We seem to be living in a time when lies, which get their boots on so fast, are propagated in many ways. Ergo, it is good to begin with asking for a source, then another and then another, as possible. Ditto with "show your work,: as we were sometimes asked to do in school (in yesteryear).

But at least an assertion by someone who refuses to offer (or respond with) a citation or reference proves -- at the minimum -- that an assertion remains an assertion. Full stop, as the Brits would say.
