Grew up in a suburb outside Detroit but went to Wayne State University for four years (1964-1968) including delivering campus mail during the Detroit riots in 1967. National Guardsman with rifle at 45 degree angle was on our big mail truck and said “Watch upward for snipers. I mean that.”
Nearest supermarket (where I shopped) was burned to the ground and pictured on national TV with charred roofing and cables hanging down toward the floor.
