Maine Woman, 87, Fed Home Intruder Peanut Butter Crackers Before Calling Police on Rotary Phone

A Maine woman told local news that she fed a home invader peanut butter crackers before calling police.

Marjorie Perkins, 87, said she woke up to a half-naked teenage intruder standing over her bed around 2 a.m. on July 26, threatening to cut her with a knife he had brought inside her home but left in another room.

"I thought to myself, [if] he's going to cut, then I’m going to kick," she told The Associated Press.

She put on her shoes and fought back against the young intruder, who struck her in the head and cheek before he apparently turned around and headed toward her kitchen. Perkins told AP that the teenager was "awfully hungry," so she fed him a box of peanut butter and honey crackers, two protein drinks and two tangerines. While he was collecting his pants, Perkins dialed 911 on a rotary phone and spoke with a dispatcher.

87-year-old Brunswick woman says she fought off juvenile home intruder

That's how they make 'em Downeast. Grandma will fight off an intruder, but that won't get in the way of Yankee hospitality.

He can't have gotten that far with all that food in him.

An old gal ran the country store up near our cabin. She lived there year round in the back of the store. Outhouse. Northern Minnesota. Alone.

She told me the story of how somebody broke in and they came into her bedroom and she startled them. She figured they thought it was just a store and it was empty. They knocked the curtain off the entry to her bedroom (no door) and she told them to put it back and they did! Then she told them to leave. She could be pretty ornery and tough when she needed to be.

It was many years after that that a similar thing happened. but this time five Indians (cousins) beat her to death. She was 84.

That’ll a heck of a lot better than the baloney sandwiches he’ll likely be eating for the next day or two.

I thought two things might have been the ending, not making a phone call.
1) intruder finishes the cracker treats and then grimaces, holds his stomach and starts shaking and foaming at the mouth.

2) “Here’s something to go with the crackers, dearie.” Pulls out loaded Smith and Wesson and empties it into his center mass.

Oh, well.

I didn’t think rotary phones worked nowadays?

In many cases, they still can.

“I didn’t think rotary phones worked nowadays?”

My understanding is that in most areas of the U.S., rotary telephones’ so-called “pulse dialing” is still supported. The computers “listening” to punched tones on a landline will recognize a pulse dial and adjust accordingly.

my next door neighbor still has a 60's wall mounted rotary phone. It's the only phone he and his wife has.

Every time I go over there I say how cool that is.

Systems are supposed to still be Rotary compatible. Even the cable modems that also have phone hookups will recognize a Rotary dial.

“I didn’t think rotary phones worked nowadays?”

I had to surrender my “digital” dialing land line some years ago. For a while I was saving $1/mo.

I didn’t think it would either. Seems to me, I had one of those, about 40 years ago. 😆

The ARRIS TM822G telephony cable modem I had won’t recognize rotary/pulse dial.

I haven’t tried rotary/pulse dial with the newer ARRIS SBV3202 telephony cable modem yet, but I have no reason to expect it to work.

Some exchanges still allow rotary phones to be used. I wish that was true in my area. There’s a dedicated phone jack that can work when the electricity goes out but I can’t use it. We should be able to at least attach a clock or a night light to it so that it isn’t totally useless.

Ahhh, just found out that old phone jacks can be turned into ethernet jacks or, even better, a charging outlet when the electricity is out and the cell phone needs recharging. Too much of a coward to convert it myself, will add that to my list for the electrician.

The senior citizen kept her cool, praise be to God!
