Opinion With the counteroffensive underway, 12 charts show the latest from Ukraine
Washington Post Online ^ | July 10,2023 | O'Hanlon

Ukraine has begun its long-awaited counteroffensive after withstanding a months-long and ongoing battering from Russian missiles and drones. Nine new Ukrainian brigades, totaling perhaps 30,000 troops, with modern armored vehicles and well-trained soldiers (though little air power) are moving into action. But because Russia has prepared for them, they face uncertain prospects. Even the recent Putin-Prigozhin melodrama might not change the standoff substantially — though it is too soon to be sure how Wagner mercenaries will perform with their former leader on the ropes.

This war is a stalemate. Will both sides come to a settlement?

No movement since Ukraine captured Kherson at the end of 2022.

Bahkmut is still contested.

With respect, the WaPo article in question is almost a month old. Stalemate seems an adequate description, after the fighting ceases through one method or another. Armistice. Frozen conflict. A win for one side or the other. And other alternatives not listed.

I suspect that a "settlement" is not in the offing, as neither side seems ready. Perhaps you hold a different view?

Some Freeper threads cheer the Ukrainian side with "Ruzzia lost two Ships in the Black sea | Ukrainian Drones are Awesome!" and "Ukrainian Army Advancement on the south| Ruzzian defense get weaker," while no complete threads seem to be cheering on the Russians with a pro-Putin advocacy though some individuals are called pro-Putin.

Nevertheless, with "sides" represented as represented here on these threads, "settlement" seems not likely in the moment.

Will both sides come to a settlement? Eventually, given history's hard lessons. But some wars lasted far longer than this one, as our own history in Afghanistan demonstrates.

The WaPo is NOT a reliable source.

Do they think we are stupid? The offensive kicked off a month ago and was slaughtered. This is getting to be like the numerous DeSantis reboots.

What a steaming pile of propaganda.

Ukraine's counteroffensive has been going on for TWO months, cost 43,000 Ukrainian lives and has reached the first line of Russian defense.

There is absolutely zero chance of Ukraine retaking any lost territory.

The Russians have the objective grinding the Ukrainian military into dust. That is happening. Once the Ukrainian military is completely depleted, Ukraine will have the choice of surrendering or losing more territory.

Dated July 10, 2023. Not a stalemate. Russia now holds more territory than before its second invasion in Feb 2022.
