Ukrainians find refuge in North Dakota as arrivals fill oil field jobs amid labor shortage

Maksym Bunchukov remembers hearing rockets explode in Zaporizhzhia as the war in Ukraine began.

“It was terrible,” he said. He and his wife sent their adult daughter west to Lviv for safety and joined her later with their pets.

Now, about 18 months after the war broke out, Bunchukov is in North Dakota, like thousands of Ukrainians who came over a century ago.

He is one of 16 new arrivals who are part of a trade group’s pilot effort through the Uniting for Ukraine humanitarian program to recruit refugees and migrants during a workforce shortage. Twelve more Ukrainians are scheduled to arrive by Aug. 15 as part of the North Dakota Petroleum Council’s Bakken Global Recruitment of Oilfield Workers program.

There’s multiple issues here.

1. In an ideal world the USA wouldn’t be involved in propping up EU NATO at all, wouldn’t have agreed to be a signatory to the Budapest Memorandum 30 years ago, and would have vacated its seat on the UN Security Council... and the Russia-Ukraine conflict wouldn’t be on the Federal books (budgetary or politically) at all. But we are where we are because the USA took on the obligations decades ago and no President has said that it’s time to bail out.

2. If Russia can successfully annexe five regions of Ukraine for all manner of vranyo reasons, that’d then mean no matter how internationally agreed a national border is, if just one state decides to redraw the boundaries it can do.

3. By the same token, Russia ,China and the USA and UK all signed security assurances with Ukraine before Russia invaded. If none of the signatories had responded then ALL security guarantee treaties would be completely redundant.

4. So in the grand scheme of things, if you took the “how would America react if Mexico did a Cuba and started hosting Russian missiles” question often posted by the Putinists... If America had done all these things it’d only have three options: redraw its own borders, invade Mexico, or suck it up.

Being the invader doesn’t win you friends, as you can see with Russia having ONLY Chechnya, Eritrea, Belarus and North Korea actively backing their invasion of Ukraine. The majority of BRICS, including China, is not arguing that Russia is right to invade Ukraine; they just don’t like being in the position of having Russia so clearly in the wrong when they’d rather be treating the West as the wrongdoers.
