In the 1960s and 1970s the AR-15 was available but no one wanted them. Plastic, NOT ACCURATE, too small for deer, ugly.

That was Eugene Stoner's original idea. It was called the AR-10. Came out just too late to really catch on. US had already gone with the M14, rest of the free world had already gone with some variant of the FN-FAL.
