Russia's most prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny says that he expects to see his prison sentence extended by nearly two decades on Friday (Aug 4) when a court delivers its verdict on a battery of new charges against him. Who is he and how did he get to this point?

Navalny, 47, is by far the best known figure in Russia's splintered opposition, with supporters casting him as a Nelson Mandela-style figure who will one day be freed from jail to lead the country. The Kremlin has tried to portray him as politically irrelevant, and President Vladimir Putin makes a point of never speaking his name.
Navalny earned admiration around the world for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he underwent treatment for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent in Siberia. He was immediately arrested on arrival.

The Russians I see online despise him and are supporting Trump.
They say Trump did nothing wrong but Navalny broke a lot of Russian laws.
I saw today short videos of anti_Trump protesters posted on a Russian site. The comment was
“they look just as you expect them to look”
Made me laugh.
They call Navalny a foreign agent.
The EU is calling for his immediate release.
Nuff said.
We fomented an illegal coup in Ukraine. We tried it Belarus. So, the Russians have good reason to believe we'll use someone like Navalny to foment one in Russia.

Navalny was previously sentences three times for using the government position to defraud a regional treasury, as an accessory in bribery by his brother who was a head of government agency, and for stealing campaign donations.
All cases are rock solid.
So, exactly a person the CIA would pick to lead “popular” opposition.
The problem is that nobody in Russia views him like this. His rating was 5% max, and 70% consider him a paid shill of the foreign interests.
