Fremantle Highway: Disaster averted as burnt car carrier reaches port (500 EVs onboard)
BBC News ^ | 8-3 | By Paul Kirby

More than a week after fire swept through a cargo ship carrying almost 4,000 cars in the North Sea, the crippled ship has been towed into port in the north-east of the Netherlands.

The charred hulk of the Fremantle Highway arrived at Eemshaven after a 64km (40-mile) journey from a position north of the island of Schiermonnikoog.

The ship had left Bremerhaven in Germany en route for Egypt when fire broke out on 25 July.

One of the crew died in the blaze.

The other 22 survived, and seven of them jumped into the sea to escape. All but two of the crew came from India.

For almost a week the fire burned aboard the 200m-long Panamanian-registered Fremantle Highway.

There were fears the ship might sink, raising fears of an environmental disaster in the waters of the Wadden Sea, designated a World Heritage site on the edge of the North Sea.

The Dutch coast guard stressed the cause of the fire on the 11-deck ship was unknown and authorities were careful not to speculate. But an audio recording emerged of one rescue worker suggesting it had started in the battery of an electric vehicle and "it appears an electric vehicle exploded too".

Of the 3,783 cars on board the ship, 498 were electric vehicles.

The fire started on an upper deck and salvage experts said that while four of the ship's decks were relatively undamaged in the hull, the eighth deck had partly collapsed because of the intensity of the fire.

Will be interesting to hear where the fire started, plus data on dealing with ICE vs EV fires. Maybe data will lead to more rules about parking EVs. I recall from living in DC area over 19 years that in one episode, a parking garage flooded. What if it had electric cars? What about an electric car fire in a parking garage with multiple electric cars?

People are worried that one day terrorists will use self-driving cars to wreak havoc.

We don't need to worry about the terrorists. We already have daily commuters.

I’ve wondered that very thing from day one. Imagine putting a drugged, dead, or tied up victim in a car, loaded with explosives, and programming a destination? This is not an if, but what happens the first time this actually happens?

but what happens the first time this actually happens?

Depends. If it happens in some commie blue state, it'll be attributed to global warming. If it happens in a red state, the news will only be local as the msm won't report it.

I’m curious.

Exactly what disaster was averted?

We need to control emissions from exploding EV’s.

A little duct tape and a quick paint job and she’ll be good as new.

Were the EVs in one place or spread out all over the ship ?

The idea that the potential sinking of this ship represented some kind of environmental disaster is ludicrous. Thousands of ships were sunk during WWII.

“Exactly what disaster was averted?”

Ship sinking.
Now that the ship is in port, the automobiles can be offloaded and sold at discount for water and smoke damage. Perhaps minor fire damage too.

China is always on the hunt for steel wonder if they buy it.

They have been digging up world war two ships for steel.

I read or heard a report there is really no way to effectively fight fires on the car carriers. The cars are packed in like sardines and the parking decks can raised or lowered to stuff more cars on the ship.

China will want their rare earth minerals back.

Can’t see why soccer moms would put their children’s lives at risk of those thing blowing up.

What about an electric car fire in a parking garage with multiple electric cars?

`````````````````````````````````
Would the extra weight of a parking garage filled with EVs over burden a garage designed to hold lighter ICE vehicles?
If the greenie’s dreams come true and everybody drives an EV, what would it do to our nation’s roads?
Surely greater minds than mine already have these problems figured out.
Who, in their right mind, buys these disasters on wheels? Plugs it in in their attached garage over night and waits for it to kill their entire family and possibly the neighbor’s family too.
I’ll tell you who, virtue signaling liberal idiots, with more money than brains, who loves to receive kudos from their virtue signaling moronic liberal friends..
