I agree nothing has “backfired”. This is a well-orchestrated effort to ensure Trump gets the GOP nomination. In 2016, Trump narrowly defeated Hillary with 45.9% of the vote. In 2020, he received 46.9% of the vote. Democrat strategists know that’s a ceiling he has no chance of breaking through, especially with his 60% disapproval rating.

Even the feeble, scandal-ridden Biden would eke out a win against Trump by (a) staying in his basement, and (b) running $2B in slickly produced “feel good” ads in the swing states.

It’s too bad the Trump loyalists can’t foresee this outcome. The scariest part of all is that Biden will shortly thereafter hand the keys over to Kamala Harris.

You are construing “backfired” to the ultimate outcome of the election 15 months away. Others are viewing it as an attempt to lessen the regard of the people for Trump, period. They want to lower his favorability to the teens.

Yes, because Mike Pence, Ron DeSantis or Mitt Romney would have so much better of a chance of "beating" Biden....
