My acquaintance, an American retiree expat lost everything but the clothes on his back when that house of cards collapsed. It didn't help that he married local and had a native extended family with local resources. The only sure way is to live in a near-homogenious society/culture where "your people" are the only and overwhelming majority. There are a few ethnostates out there. But even they are awash in the tides of globalization and will face mounting pressures.
