Chuck Grassley is doing OK. It’s not necessarily the age, but their condition. We need a fair mechanism to get these incapacitated folk to retire. Should start with family and trusted advisors. Always the potential for a good one to be politically railroaded out, however.

To me a solution isn’t that difficult. Mandatory congition testing at a given age. I’m no doctor, but I’d think 60 would be reasonable. And, a mandatory retirement age. If their job is as important as it SHOULD be, then mandatory retirement to allow more capable people to fill their role is reasonable. I’d suggest age 75.
Many use their staff to lighten their load...however there’s no guarantee they’re giving them the right information.
