The judicial reform debate uncovers widespread Israeli distrust in political leadership
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government passed the first piece of its judicial reform legislation last Monday. The judicial reforms, first unveiled by Justice Minister Yariv Levin in January, have been a point of contention. Protests began the weekend after the judicial reforms were announced. Excellent and fair overview of a very complicated problem.
The left in Israel lost the last election but still controls the judiciary, and they are fighting tooth and nail to hold on to that source of power.
There is no other nation in the world where an un-elected supreme court chooses its own members, and also reserves the right to overrule anything the executive or legislature does.
It looks to me as though the rioting and threats by the left have worked, and Netanyahu and his coalition will fail to restrain the court. Too bad for Israel.
It’s really simple. The courts are supposed to be 100% about the law, and resonableness is not and has no legal standard, it - resonableness - is 100% subjective and wholey outside the law.
“Reasonable” is a term and a legal standard used often in law.
Define it.
Define it.
Massive public demonstrations and flawlessly deceptive talking points and public speakers require massive planning and massive amounts of money.
That visually epic sea of Israeli flags a couple days ago probably cost well over a million dollars.
No doubt all the rainbow pervert flags cost plenty, as did PLO and Hamas flags waved by chilonim.
If the court decides what is “reasonable” then you have just given the court arbitrary power and have a judicial dictatorship.
Yes, it’s all obscured by a complicated process, but you speak truth about the current selection process. The MSM never gets into that of course.
“Why is Israel so divided?”
Because half the population is the same people ruining America through casuistry and misuse of the courts, from which they derive a lot of power - and the other half of the population is normal people who want to live normal healthy lives without interference by the courts in their ability for self-rule.
