The cop asks “do you mind if I ask you something”? The correct answer is, “No sir, I prefer you don’t”. Then, “have a nice day, officer”, is next.
I do not see any rights problem here. No drugs or illegal stuff in the car, no problem. If asked, “do you mind if we search your car”, the correct answer is “I prefer you didn’t do that”. This prevents officers from having the opportunity to plant evidence.
The key is to always talk to a police officer with respect and politeness, and never be baited by hostility. Always worked for me. What is so hard about this approach?
Police officers are essential and deserve respect. However, they are not our friends.
“The key is to always talk to a police officer with respect and politeness”
That is good advice—even for hard core criminals.
It maximizes the chances for a good outcome—nothing to lose by being pleasant and respectful.
Many criminals raise the suspicions of cops with a hostile attitude and their (often hilarious) loud (usually false) interpretation of the law.
There was one criminal (drug dealer) on Cops who had been doing business for years and had never been caught though he had been pulled over many times.
He admitted his “secret” was that he was so polite and pleasant during those stops that the cops were persuaded he had nothing to hide and didn’t bother searching him or his vehicle.
