Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said he will not sign a federal abortion ban to protect unborn babies even though he is “personally pro-life.”
A businessman and author, Ramaswamy has described himself as “unapologetically pro-life,” but his comments July 21 on the All-In Podcast conflict with the pro-life mission.
Although he believes “unborn life is life,” Ramaswamy said a limit or ban on killing unborn babies at the federal level would not be “principled” because abortion is an issue for the states.
“I would not support a federal abortion ban of any kind on principled ground,” he told the All-In Podcast. “Because to me, I am grounded in constitutional principles and I think there’s no legal basis for the federal government to legislate. The 10th Amendment says that part of the American experiment is that we have diversity across states, and I think this is a states issue.”
Ramaswamy said he is “open to persuasion” if a constitutional scholar convinces him otherwise, but right now, if elected president, he would not sign a law to limit or ban abortions. However, he did say the U.S. Supreme Court was correct to overturn Roe v. Wade, and states should be allowed to protect unborn babies’ lives.
“I’m personally a believer that unborn life is life,” he continued, before criticizing the pro-life movement for not doing enough to help families in need.
“I think the pro-life movement needs to walk the walk,” Ramaswamy said, emphasizing his commitment to supporting contraception, adoption, childcare, sexual responsibility and responsible fatherhood. If people on both sides of the debate can work together on these issues, he said abortion should not be “as divisive as we’ve made it out to be.”
This is not the first time Ramaswamy has opposed a federal ban on killing unborn babies in abortions. Earlier this month, he told Fox News that abortion “is an issue for the states,” and he does not believe the federal government should be involved.

Other candidates who have announced Republican presidential bids include former Presidential Donald Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, former North Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
The American people do not support abortions up to birth, paid for with their tax dollars, which is the position of President Joe Biden. Numerous polls show strong public opposition to taxpayer funding for elective abortions and strong public support for laws that limit abortions, especially after the first trimester.
Section 1111 is only applicable to “the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States”. There is also a federal murder statute that’s applicable if you kill a federal employee or officer. Otherwise, there is no generally applicable (to the public) federal crime of murder. That is strictly a state issue

As things stand now, it’s up to the states to decide the abortion issue. That’s the way it was before Roe vs. Wade. Conservatives wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade and we did so.
Now you want more. Who is promising you more? Will they be willing and able to follow through?

It depends on the criteria people are using to discuss the abortion issue.
Some Freepers take the position, that abortion is strictly a state issue, based on the 10th amendment, and that it is not a federal issue. Those Freepers want states to restrict abortion, but think that the federal government should not deal with abortion.
Other Freepers take the position, that the federal government should indeed pass restrictive abortion laws. Those Freepers do not consider the 10th amendment or state’s rights in their opinions.
Almost all Freepers were happy to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, but there is a split in what happens next. Some Freepers want it to be strictly a state issue, while others want federal oversight of the issue.

In the context of abortion, that question is legally up to the individual States to answer.

Reading the entire article, it's clear that he is antiabortion but also a Constitutionalist who respects the 10th Amendment. At this point, I'd interpret that as no sweeping federal ban on abortion. If someone has a way, or ways, for the Federal government to legally circumscribe “abortion rights” he might agree. This seems like a hypothetical to me.
Who is promising more? and will they deliver?
I believe life begins at conception. I also believe we need to build a culture of life, so that people’s hearts and minds are changed. I can believe this, while at the same time, am realistic about the tough political environment in this country, regarding passing laws on the subject of abortion.

Uh. Well, let’s imagine I was a Senator or Congressman. Would it be ok with you if I heard legal arguments first?
Would he say that about concentration camps. “Each state must decide for itself whether to run those.”
Utter nonsense. These children are human beings who should not be murdered and it is a federal issue.
Is abortion murder?
There is an enormous difference between Lindsay Graham's poorly drafted 15 week abortion ban and other types of abortion bans. These included bans on funding abortions for federal workers, bans of abortions on military bases, and bans of abortion of babies with heartbeats in federally funded facilities. Unfortunately, Vivek Ramaswamy will not support a federal abortion ban of any kind. This is why millions of Americans like me will now oppose his candidacy for President, Vice-President, or any appointed position.
None of the other candidates are promising less, and most would do far more. This is why I will now actively oppose Vivek Ramaswamy's candidacy for any office.
You bring up another issue. It sounds like you will not support any candidate who does not want a federal ban on abortion. Correct me if I’m wrong.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
I want us to live under the constitution and I oppose the left ramming their policies home by throwing the blanket of the 14th amendment over their policy preferences. We live under the constitution by following its language and not giving it interpretations to which the language is not susceptible. It’s quoted above. To be a citizen one must be “born.” By definition this language does not support legislation with respect to people who are not yet born.
